Early in the Morning
Nilsson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Early in the morning and I can't do right
Had a little fight with my baby last night and it's early in the morning
Don'chu know it's early in the morning
Early in the morning
I ain't got nothing, no nothing but the blues

I went to your girlfriend's house
But she was out
I knocked on your daddy's door
But he began to shout and he said,
It's early in the morning
Don'chu know it's early in the morning
Early in the morning
I ain't got nothing, no nothing but the blues

I went to Dooby Chase to get somethin' to eat
Waitress looked at me said, "Harry, you sure look beat"
And I said, It's early in the morning
Don'chu know it's early in the morning

Early in the morning
Early in the morning
Early in the morning
Early in the morning
Early in the morning
Early in the morning
Early in the morning
Early in the morning

Ain't got nothing, but the
Ain't got nothing, but the
Ain't got nothing, but the
Ain't got nothing, but the
Ain't got nothing, but the

Ain't got nothing, but the
Blues

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Nilsson's song "Early in the Morning" encapsulate the feeling of waking up after a tough night. The singer is filled with regret after a fight with their significant other and is unable to shake off the feeling of sadness that has enveloped them. The repetition of the phrase "early in the morning" emphasizes the isolation that the singer feels at that moment, as if no one else in the world is up or experiencing the same pain, and hints that this feeling may linger on throughout the day.

The song takes on a slightly more comical tone in the next verse, as the singer tries to seek solace by visiting a friend's house, only to find that they are not home. They then go to their significant other's parent's house, only to be met with hostility. The repetition of the phrase "early in the morning" throughout the verse creates a sense of disbelief that anyone would be so hostile at that time of the day.

Overall, the song captures the lingering feeling of regret after a heated argument and the sense of loneliness that accompanies it. The repeated phrase "early in the morning" emphasizes the isolation the singer is feeling and hints that they may be trapped in a pattern of sadness that will continue throughout the day.

I probably hadn't thought about this song for 40+ years, but I woke up at about 4 this morning and by 5, this song was running through my head. We had and loved this amazing album when we were young. Now that I've lived a good hunk of life, most of it as a musician of sorts, I so much more deeply appreciate the brilliance of Harry Nilsson, and this song in particular. Maybe he didn't do it in one take, but maybe he did.

Similarly, I wore this album out 40+ years ago and have recently come back to it while catching up on other HN albums I'd seen in record shops but (foolishly) never bought or listened to. I'd known back then that he was an eclectic/versatile artist who couldn't be pigeon holed, but now, more than ever and also living a fair chunk of life, I truly appreciate the contradictions ...the wondrously sensitive song writer/performer, the hard living, seemingly reckless rock 'n' roller, the devoted family man. Special bloke, gone too early.

@DonDeering

If you haven't, check out the Ray Charles original.

It definitely came about during or after an all nighter, where ever it came from. Amazon video has a documentary called “ Who is Harry Nielsen” I watched it, I knew zero about him, but recognized so many good tunes. Now I’m trying to catch up on him, this is my favorite so far! It’s such a good catch!

@lantose

Me and a buddy of mine too! He bought the album when it came out (i think ‘72) and turned his dad’s big speakers to face each other, maybe 6-7’, and crank up Jump into the Fire. We obviously fell in love with the whole album and I bought the CD in the 80’s. I love these reaction video’s because of the fond memories of great days in my life sharing the world with others! You have a great day!

Sometimes less is better. What an utterly minimalistic song. What a great vocal talent!

@SaintVodou

One of the best musicians I’d never heard of until I saw this CD cover in a relative’s collection (maybe the bathrobe got my attention). It was love at first sound. Every other song had me asking, “Hey, where do I know this from?” and/or, “HE wrote that?” Nilsson should be a lot more famous than he is...

@freerangerustler

Best song coming on the fm radio while driving around in the 68 skylark at dawn after doing a bunch of acid that night. Been a big fan of Harry's ever since.
Was summertime in 1974

Was kinda like heaven

@jeannettejohnson2375

I resemble that remark!
