In 2020, Nina departed from her previous record label, Aztec Records and became an independent artist. Later that year, she collaborated with synthwave artist Essenger on a cover of the hit song "Nightcall" by French electronic artist Kavinsky. The single was released by Fixed Neon. Sakuma Masahide composed most of the music with input from Pierson and Yuki who also wrote the lyrics. From the 30-second opening track, which starts with ominous techno music and ends with Yuki and Pierson exclaiming "Hello everybody nice to meet you we're NiNa," the band's eponymous and only album is very diverse.
The distinctive album contains a wide variety of music from straight forward ballads to electronica. Credited as a "conceptual and visual agent provocateur", Shima appears to have played a Brian Eno-like role on the recording. The album and two singles which proceeded it were all hits in Japan but are unfortunately almost unknown in other parts of the world.

Real Thing
Nina Lyrics

Once again
I'll be feeling lonely
Oh, if only things could work out like you've planned
Where can love be
Tell me why it's so hard to find somebody
Who will stand by me
And take the time to understand
[Chorus:]
I want the real thing
Or nothing at all
I need someone that I can be sure will catch me
If I should fall
Someone who'll be there when I call
Then I'll know that it's the real thing
I want the real thing
To hold me each night
Someone to love me over and over
Making the future bright
Somebody who will make it alright
And give me the real thing
Where is the moon?
Won't it smile
On just one more dreamer
Let your beams come down
And fill my empty room
Here comes the night
But if there's still a chance
That love can find me
I'll be here
Crossing my fingers
I want to know for sure
That I can feel secure
Knowing I've found an everlasting love
And once I get that under control
Then I won't let go
The song "Real Thing" by Nina expresses the feeling of loneliness and the desire for an authentic love relationship. The lyrics reveal the longing for a partner who will truly understand and stand by the singer, through thick and thin. The song begins by expressing the emptiness and loneliness of the night. The singer wishes for a true love that lasts forever, rather than just settling for something temporary. She seeks someone who will be there for her in moments of vulnerability, someone she can rely on to catch her if she falls, and someone who will make her future bright.
The chorus emphasizes the desire for the real thing - a genuine love that is not just fleeting, but rather a real relationship that will stand the test of time. The singer desires security, assurance, and the possibility for an everlasting love. The bridge, which asks “Where is the moon?”, is the singer’s way of pleading for a little bit of magic and help, a sign that could show her that love is still possible. With each line in the song, Nina reveals her vulnerable side and her honest desire to receive love that is sincere and genuine.

Here comes the night
The nighttime has arrived
Once again
As it has before
I'll be feeling lonely
I will experience isolation
Oh, if only things could work out like you've planned
If only wishes could become reality
Where can love be
Where is the affection I am seeking
Tell me why it's so hard to find somebody
Explain why it is difficult to locate a suitable partner
Who will stand by me
Who will offer support
And take the time to understand
And show empathy and comprehension
And show me love again
And display affection towards me anew
I want the real thing
I desire genuine love
Or nothing at all
Otherwise, I would rather have nothing
I need someone that I can be sure will catch me
I require a reliable partner
If I should fall
If I encounter a challenge
Someone who'll be there when I call
Someone who will provide assistance upon request
Then I'll know that it's the real thing
Then I will recognize that it is genuine love
I want the real thing
I desire authentic love
To hold me each night
To embrace me during each evening
Someone to love me over and over
Someone to demonstrate love repeatedly
Making the future bright
Making the future positive and promising
Somebody who will make it alright
Somebody who will make everything okay
And give me the real thing
And provide me with genuine love
Where is the moon?
Where is the satellite?
Won't it smile
Can it not radiate joy?
On just one more dreamer
On a single individual who has aspirations
Let your beams come down
Allow your light to descend
And fill my empty room
And make my unoccupied space full
But if there's still a chance
But if there is still hope
That love can find me
That affection can locate me
I'll be here
I will remain hopeful
Crossing my fingers
Keeping my fingers crossed to express hope
I want to know for sure
I want to be confident
That I can feel secure
That I can experience safety
Knowing I've found an everlasting love
Aware that I have discovered a perpetual affection
And once I get that under control
And once I manage that situation well
Then I won't let go
Then I will not relinquish it
