Nastasia has released six albums so far, the first of which, Dogs, was initially released in 2000 in a miniscule edition of 1000 copies on Socialist Records. The album sold out quickly and her subsequent albums, The Blackened Air (2001) and Run to Ruin (2003) were released on indie label Touch and Go Records. The label also re-released Dogs in 2004. All three albums were recorded by Steve Albini, as were later albums released on Fat Cat Records. These include On Leaving in 2006 and You Follow Me (produced in collaboration with Jim White) in 2007. Her sixth and most recent album, Outlaster, was also recorded by Steve Albini and was released in June 2010, preceded by the single Cry, Cry, Baby in May.
Nastasia was a favorite of late BBC disc jockey John Peel and recorded six sessions for his shows. The last one was recorded with the help of Tuvan throat singing group Huun-Huur-Tu. Nastasia also contributed a song to the tribute compilation for Peel named "Bird of Cuzco". Two of Nastasia's songs made Peel's annual Festive Fifty: "Ugly Face" (ranked 4th in 2002) and "You, Her & Me" (13th in 2003).

Nina Nastasia Lyrics

It's time to stake your claim
But it's not everyone else's problem
And it's not anyone else's fault
You wanna feel okay
You wanna think you've tried hard
But it's not everyone else's problem
I know it's important
To feel justified
I know you thought everything
Would be much easier
It's time to show your face
It's time to know yourself
'Cause it's not everyone else's problem
And it's not anyone else's fault
You wanna feel okay
You wanna think you've tried hard
I know it's important
To feel justified
I know you thought everything
Would be much easier
In this song, Nina Nastasia is urging someone to take responsibility for their own life and stop blaming others for their problems. She tells them that it is time to take ownership of their own identity and stop trying to make their problems someone else's responsibility. The repetition of the phrase "it's not everyone else's problem, and it's not anyone else's fault" emphasizes that the person needs to stop looking outward for solutions and instead look within themselves.
Nastasia acknowledges that it is hard to let go of the desire to feel justified in one's actions, and that the person may have thought that life would be easier than it is. However, she is firm in her assertion that it is time for the person to face themselves and take control of their life. The repeated lines "you wanna feel okay, you wanna think you've tried hard" highlight the person's desire for validation and recognition, but Nastasia reminds them that it is ultimately their own responsibility to achieve those goals.
Overall, the song serves as a reminder for individuals to take responsibility for their own lives and not expect others to solve their problems. It encourages introspection and self-awareness as the first steps towards personal growth and fulfillment.

My now husband made me a mixed CD many years ago, with this song on it. We were falling in love, while working together, but I was living with abusive man that I needed help escaping. Soooo Dramatic, I know, but at the time it was serious sht in my life lol. I can't hear this without thinking of that time in my life, and it helps me remember why I fell in love with my hubby.
