To Be Young Gifted and Black
Nina Simone楄 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

To be young, gifted and black
Oh what a lovely precious dream
To be young, gifted and black
Open your heart to what I mean

In the whole world you know
There are billion boys and girls
Who are young, gifted and black
And that's a fact!

Young, gifted and black
We must begin to tell our young
There's a world waiting for you
This is a quest that's just begun

When you feel really low
Yeah, there's a great truth you should know
When you're young, gifted and black
Your soul's intact

Young, gifted and black
How I long to know the truth
There are times when I look back
And I am haunted by my youth

Oh but my joy of today
Is that we can all be proud to say

To be young, gifted and black
Is where it's at

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" are an anthem for the African American community, especially the younger generation. The song emphasizes the idea that being young, gifted, and black is a precious dream that should be celebrated and that there is a world of opportunities waiting for young people.

The song starts by stating that being young, gifted, and black is a lovely, precious dream that must be embraced with open hearts. Nina Simone highlights the abundance of young, gifted, and black people in the world and insists that it is a fact that should be recognized, celebrated, and acted upon. She stresses that the older generation must educate and guide the younger ones to show them that there is a whole world out there waiting for them to conquer and that their journey has just begun.

The second verse addresses the struggles that young, gifted, and black people may face in life, including moments of despair and feeling low. However, Nina Simone offers hope and reminds them that their soul is intact and that they are young, gifted, and black. She urges the young generation to accept this reality and to use it as a source of inspiration to achieve greatness.

The final verse of the song praises the advantages of being young, gifted, and black. Nina Simone talks about how she sometimes looks back on her past and is haunted by her youth, but she rejoices in the fact that today, young, gifted, and black people can be proud of their identity and recognize its value. She declares that to be young, gifted, and black is where it's at, and this is a message that should be carried through the generations.

Not a song. A hymn. I'm not even black and tears come to my eyes. Black people in Brazil and elsewhere deserve better. You are beautiful and gifted ❤

An anthem actually

I remember hearing this song on the radio as a child. My parents (RIP) explained the importance of being proud of our blackness to me and my siblings. I love the way she holds that last note to emphasize the importance of what she is singing about. We also had James Brown quote on black and out proud “and Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions “We’re A Winner “
