Mary's Boy Child
Nina Frederik Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Long time ago in Bethlehem,
So the Holy Bible say,
Mary''s boy child, Jesus Christ,
Was born on Christmas day,
Hark, now hear the angels sing,
A newborn King today,
And man will live forevermore,
Because of Christmas day.
Trumpets sound and angels sing,
Listen to what they say,
That man will live forevermore,
Because of Christmas day.
Hark, now hear the angels sing,
A newborn King today,
And man will live forevermore,
Because of Christmas day.
While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
They saw a bright new shining star,
They heard a choir sing a song,
The music seemed to come from afar,
Now, Joseph and his wife, Mary,
Come to Bethlehem that night,
They found no place to bear her child,
Not a single room was in sight.
By and by, they find a little nook,
In a stable all forlorn,

And in a manger cold and dark,
Mary''s little Boy was born!

Overall Meaning

The song "Mary's Boy Child" is a classic Christmas tune that describes the birth of Jesus Christ as it is told in the Holy Bible. The song takes us back in time to Bethlehem, where Mary gave birth to Jesus on Christmas day. According to the song, the angels sang and trumpets sounded as they announced the arrival of the "newborn King." The song suggests that the reason for the celebration of Christmas is because man will "live forevermore" because of the birth of Jesus.

The second verse of the song describes the scene where the shepherds were watching their flocks by night, and they saw a bright new shining star. They heard a choir singing a song, and the music appeared to come from a distance. Joseph and Mary also arrived in Bethlehem that night, but they had trouble finding a place to stay. Eventually, they found a stable, where they were able to give birth to baby Jesus in a manger.

Beautiful version of this lovely song. Their accents are also truly wonderful....memories of much simpler times when I had my wonderful parents with me.

@ramakrishnashenoy9090

I heard it the first time half a century ago, but even today I find it soul-stirringly beautiful in its simplicity

Oh my word, I'm coming Chrismassy all over. When we were small my parents used to play their EP with this song on it when we came home from midnight Mass. We'd be allowed a small Advocaat taken with a proper tiny Advocaat silver spoon, together with Mum's Dutch Christmas treats such as Christmas crown and stollen. Merry Christmas.
