From their inception in late 2003, the band's energetic live performances earned them a hardcore fanbase after playing for only a few months on the Manchester music scene. In 2004 the band were signed to Island records and spent the year touring the UK and recording their first studio album with producer Rob Schnapf in Los Angeles. In 2005 Nine Black Alps toured the UK extensively, promoting the release of their debut album, Everything Is on 13th June 2005. Their first U.S. single was Cosmopolitan; their album Everything Is was released in America on February 28, 2006.
The band's second album, again recorded in LA with producer Dave Sardy Love/Hate, was released on 29 October 2007 and heralded a split with Island Records shortly thereafter. However, Nine Black Alps went on to self-finance and record their third full-length album with producer Dave Eringa, entitled 'Locked Out from the Inside'. Only available as a download from the band's own website - http://www.nineblackalps.com, the album was a return to the louder, heavier sounds of the first record.
Nine Black Alps, after a hiatus of almost 2 years, have been back in the studio as a 3-piece recording tracks for a fourth album, with a possible release in 2012.
Everybody Is

You know that I could be a hypocrite again
Anyway, it's just a phase
Because tomorrow is another day, tomorrow we can start again
Everybody is a liar
Everybody has a price
And I know the only reason for it all's to stay alive
Smile, make me laugh
It's the only way that I'll be comin' back
Oh friend, it's not the end
Because tomorrow is another day, tomorrow we can start again
Everybody is a liar
Everybody has a price
And I know the only reason for it all's to stay alive
And I know the only reason for it all's to stay alive
Sometimes all I want's a liar
Sometimes I don't have a price
And I know the only reason for it all's to stay alive
The song "Everybody Is" by Nine Black Alps is a commentary on the dark and manipulative side of human nature. The opening lines "Hey, put on a face / You know that I could be a hypocrite again" suggest that the persona of the song is aware of their own tendency to act phony or insincere. However, they see this as simply being human and admit that tomorrow is a new opportunity to start fresh. The chorus "Everybody is a liar / Everybody has a price / And I know the only reason for it all's to stay alive" highlights the idea that everyone has their own motives and desires that guide their actions, and sometimes these involve deceit and greed. The second verse "Smile, make me laugh / It's the only way that I'll be comin' back / Oh friend, it's not the end / Because tomorrow is another day, tomorrow we can start again" continues this theme of superficiality and manipulation as the persona seeks entertainment and validation from others, even if it's not genuine friendship.
The bridge "Sometimes all I want's a liar / Sometimes I don't have a price / And I know the only reason for it all's to stay alive" adds a twist to the song's message by suggesting that the persona themselves may be complicit in the cycle of dishonesty and greed. They acknowledge that they too have moments of wanting to deceive or be deceived, and that ultimately everyone is just trying to survive in this world.
Overall, "Everybody Is" is a thought-provoking and slightly cynical take on human nature and the lengths people will go to get what they want. It's a reminder to be aware of our own motives and to try to live honestly, even if it's not always easy.
