For all of its esoteric imagery and production value-driven presentation, the video for Closer just doesn’t quite tap into the heart of our generation the same way March Of The Pigs does. This was so impactful to watch, Trent made being a rock star cool again after the grunge boom made everyone dress down in t-shirts and flannelette, and look at their shoes while playing for a few years.

NIN came along at the perfect time. Jane's Addiction had just broken up and a fearless new leader was needed, who wouldn't be afraid to break society norms. Nirvana was great, they had the Seattle scene, but NIN created their own scene, if you will; a much darker scene.

I've literally seen this video HUNDREDS of times, and I've never seen that end bit with the hand over the camera lens and Trent getting hair and makeup touch up.

I remember being in 10th or 11th grade and the teacher had left the classroom for a decent period of time, but I can't remember why...Someone turned on the TV and MTV was on, and this video came on. I already was madly in love/obsessed with Nin and loved this video, and the excitement of seeing it in school where it felt taboo and forbidden was exhilarating.
Plus everyone looked to me, as the leading expert on all things goth/industrial as I was the first extreme edgy 90s goth in the area. Those that didn't know me were afraid of me, especially teachers. I learned from another teacher that a group of teachers (That didn't know me at my school) had a meeting about me because they thought I was a CULT LEADER.

This video was a peek at the man behind the curtain of the mysterious underground world I was privy too, shedding some insight into whatever my peers had thought thus far about my life/interests.
All I have to say is THANK GODS I GRADUATED THE YEAR BEFORE THE TRAGIC EVENTS AT COLUMBINE.

We had to wait until after school to watch this and MTV still sucked back then anyone near the Canadian border before 2005 will understand. We were musical refugees displaced between nu metal and boy bands, but we had a American Canadian music channel called Much Music and it was a glorious experience.
