The Void
Nine Lashes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What sort of place is this?
How did it get this far?
We'd never hear them say
We'll never become
It's like a dream in a sense
I never saw this far
But I see the fault
It's like it's never enough

So please just say
Where do you go
If nothing can satisfy
I've wasted all this time
I'm finding the road
And tonight the sky
Is burning bright for me

I'm pleading innocence
They'll never see these scars
Just like the world
To try and tear us apart

But I won't forget
I'll see this through
To the end

So please just say
Where do you go
If nothing can satisfy
I've wasted all this time
I'm finding the road
And tonight the sky
Is burning bright for me

Where do you go?
Where do you find your home?
Or satisfy your hunger?

So please just say
Where do you go
If nothing can satisfy
I've wasted all this time
I'm finding the road

And tonight the sky
Is burning bright for me

Overall Meaning

The Nine Lashes song “The Void” speaks to the human search for fulfillment and purpose. The lyrics express frustration with life and the feeling of being unfulfilled no matter how much effort is put into finding that satisfaction. The opening lines of the song, “What sort of place is this? How did it get this far?” express a sense of incredulity at the unfulfilling nature of life. The singer then goes on to say, “We’d never hear them say, We’ll never become,” implying that there are others who do not struggle with this feeling while the singer himself cannot escape it.

The song continues with the singer delving deeper into this feeling of being unfulfilled. The lyrics state, “It’s like a dream in a sense, I never saw this far, but I see the fault, it’s like it’s never enough.” This metaphor of a dream illustrates the sense of unreality surrounding the search for meaning and fulfillment. The singer sees “the fault” in this dream, but cannot quite articulate what it is that is missing. Yet, despite this feeling of being lost and unfulfilled, the chorus provides a glimmer of hope. The singer asks, “Where do you go if nothing can satisfy? I’m finding the road, and tonight the sky is burning bright for me.” This ending provides a sense of perseverance in the face of adversity and keeps the hope alive that fulfillment and purpose can still be found.
