Do You Love Me
Nirvana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You really like my limousine
You like the way the wheels roll
You like my seven inch leather heels
And goin' to all of the shows

But...
Do you love me?
Really love me?
Do you love me?

You like the credit cards and private planes
Money can really take you far
You like the hotels and fancy clothes
And the sound of electric guitars

You really like rock 'n' roll
All of the fame and the masquerade
You like the concerts and studios
And all the money honey that I make

Your backstage pass and black sunglasses
Make you look just like a queen

Even the fans they know your face
From all of the magazines

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nirvana's song "Do You Love Me" express a deep sense of insecurity and doubt about the authenticity of a person's love. The singer of the song lists off material possessions and external pleasures that their partner seems to enjoy, such as their limousine, leather heels, credit cards, and access to private planes. They mention the allure of fame, rock 'n' roll, and the glamorous lifestyle that comes with it, including the hotels and fancy clothes and the sound of electric guitars. Yet, despite all of this, the singer questions whether their partner truly loves them or if they are merely attracted to these superficial aspects of their life.

Throughout the song, there is a sense of loneliness and isolation. In spite of all the glitz and glam, the singer seems to feel like an outsider, looking in on the fame and fortune that surrounds them. The song suggests that material possessions and external pleasures can never truly satisfy our deepest desires for love and connection. The singer is left questioning whether anyone can truly love them for who they are, outside of their fame and wealth.

This song is a departure from Nirvana's usual grunge sound and was never officially released, but it still holds an important place in their discography. It speaks to the universal human experience of longing for authentic connection, even amidst the distractions and illusions of material success.

Yes I wanna know (Do you wanna know?)
Yes I wanna know

Because I've been really trying to tell ya
That what I am trying to say
Is what I am trying to tell ya
And I'm trying to tell ya that I don't know

Because I don't know what I am trying to say
What I am trying to say is that I don't know
What I'm trying to tell ya 'cause
I don't know what I am trying to tell ya

Cause I don't say
And I'm trying to know 'cause
I'm trying to tell ya
What I don't know what to say

Because I'm trying to tell ya
Cause I don't know what I am trying to say
And what I'm saying is knowing to say
That I'm trying to tell ya

That you must tell me that you're knowing
And I'm telling you what I am saying
And I'm knowing
Knowing that I am trying to say

And I say
Because you have to say
But I don't know what I'm saying
And I don't say, I don't tell

...

(Fucking turn it off, turn it off)

I'd never heard this before. It's actually really cool to hear Krist and Kurt singing together.

That scream is by far the most powerful scream on any Nirvana recording. Hell, on any recording I've ever heard. That wasn't no weak 80's falsetto scream, either. That was all chest voice

Rainflowers

His voice is epic
