Do You Love Me?
Nirvana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You really like my limousine
You like the way the wheels roll
You like my seven inch leather heels
And goin' to all of the shows

But...
Do you love me?
Really love me?
Do you love me?

You like the credit cards and private planes
Money can really take you far
You like the hotels and fancy clothes
And the sound of electric guitars

You really like rock 'n' roll
All of the fame and the masquerade
You like the concerts and studios
And all the money honey that I make

Your backstage pass and black sunglasses
Make you look just like a queen
Even the fans they know your face
From all of the magazines

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nirvana's cover of Kiss' "Do You Love Me?" appear to critique the superficial nature of a relationship based on material possessions and status. The opening lines mention a limousine and seven-inch leather heels, items that are often associated with wealth and power. The singer questions whether their partner truly loves them for who they are, or if they are just enamored with the lifestyle that comes with being with someone famous and wealthy. The mention of "credit cards and private planes" further emphasizes the materialism that the singer believes is at the heart of their partner's attraction.

The chorus, which repeats the question "Do you love me?" multiple times, is a direct challenge to the partner's motivations. The singer is looking for confirmation that the relationship is based on more than just superficial desires, and is ultimately searching for a deeper sense of connection.

The lyrics also touch on themes of fame and celebrity, with lines like "All of the fame and the masquerade" and "From all of the magazines." The singer appears to be jaded by the trappings of celebrity life, and is longing for a sense of authenticity and genuine affection.

Overall, "Do You Love Me?" is a scathing critique of materialism and superficiality in relationships, as well as a commentary on the isolating effects of fame and wealth.

Yes I wanna know (Do you wanna know?)
Yes I wanna know

Because I've been really trying to tell ya
That what I am trying to say
Is what I am trying to tell ya
And I'm trying to tell ya that I don't know

Because I don't know what I am trying to say
What I am trying to say is that I don't know
What I'm trying to tell ya 'cause
I don't know what I am trying to tell ya

Cause I don't say
And I'm trying to know 'cause
I'm trying to tell ya
What I don't know what to say

Because I'm trying to tell ya
Cause I don't know what I am trying to say
And what I'm saying is knowing to say
That I'm trying to tell ya

That you must tell me that you're knowing
And I'm telling you what I am saying
And I'm knowing
Knowing that I am trying to say

And I say
Because you have to say
But I don't know what I'm saying
And I don't say, I don't tell

...

(Fucking turn it off, turn it off)

I'd never heard this before. It's actually really cool to hear Krist and Kurt singing together.

That scream is by far the most powerful scream on any Nirvana recording. Hell, on any recording I've ever heard. That wasn't no weak 80's falsetto scream, either. That was all chest voice

Rainflowers

His voice is epic
