Down in the Dark
Nirvana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, you're goin' down in the dark
Show my lonely night is fallin'
I don't have very long
I think my blood might boil
Then my veins might burn
And you're gonna make it better for a little while

Baby, you're gonna die someday
See you when you're crawlin', wasted
Then you'll start to fade
That won't be so I'm sinkin' faster
I wouldn't wait so long
It won't get any easier in the dark

Oh yeah
You will
You will
You will
You will
You will

Baby, you're goin' down in the dark
Think my lonely night is fallin'
I don't have very long
Think my blood might boil
And then my veins might burn
And you're gonna make it better for a little while

Oh yeah
You will (11x's)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nirvana's "Down in the Dark" portray a sense of loneliness, desperation, and a longing for comfort. The opening line "Baby, you're goin' down in the dark" echoes like a warning of impending doom. The singer feels like night time is closing in, bringing nothing but isolation and despair. He has no one to turn to and nowhere to go, as he sings "I don't have very long". The line "I think my blood might boil, then my veins might burn" could be interpreted as an allusion to passion and pain that eventually consumes the singer.

The repeated line "you're gonna make it better for a little while" suggests a momentary relief, the kind that can be found in indulging in vices like drugs or alcohol, but it's temporary and fleeting. The second verse "Baby, you're gonna die someday/See you when you're crawlin', wasted/ Then you'll start to fade" is a grim reminder of mortality and an invitation to indulge and escape while we can. The last line "It won't get any easier in the dark" seems to imply that whatever the singer is going through, there's no easy way out.

In conclusion, "Down in the Dark" is a song that addresses the universal themes of loneliness, mortality, and the search for comfort. The lyrics paint a picture of a person who is struggling to cope with their loneliness and pain, and finds solace in temporary fixes, even if they know it won't last long.

This is neither a "Nirvana" record nor a "Screaming Trees" record. It is Kurt Cobain singing a song on Mark Lanegan's solo album The Winding Sheet. It includes Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic on bass. So it's more like a cross between Nirvana and Screaming Trees. The album was produced by Mike Johnson of Dinosaur Jr. The album also includes a Cobain-Lanegan-Novoselic collaboration of the folk classic "Where Did You Sleep Last Night," which Nirvana would later perform on MTV and release on their "Unplugged" record. The Mark Lanegan version has Lanegan on lead vocals, Cobain on backup vocals and guitar, and Novoselic on bass.
