Nirvana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come as you are, as you were
As I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend
As an known enemy

Take your time, hurry up
The choice is yours, don't be late
Take a rest as a friend
As an old

Memoria, memoria
Memoria, memoria

Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach
As I want you to be
As a trend, as a friend
As an old

Memoria, memoria
Memoria, memoria

And I swear that I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun

Memoria, memoria
Memoria, memoria
(No I don't have a gun)

And I swear that I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun
No I don't have a gun

(Memoria, memoria)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nirvana's song "Come As You Are" appear to be about acceptance and self-expression. The repetition of the phrase "come as you are" suggests a welcoming attitude towards those who may feel out of place or different. The use of different descriptors, such as "as a friend," "as a known enemy," and "as an old memoria," further emphasizes the idea of acceptance regardless of one's background or status.

The line "take your time, hurry up" may speak to the pressure to conform and fit in with society's expectations, while "the choice is yours, don't be late" encourages individuality and taking the time to figure out who you are.

The second verse, which mentions being "doused in mud, soaked in bleach," could be interpreted as a rejection of superficiality and conformity. The repetition of "memoria" may indicate a desire to hold onto memories or moments that feel authentic and true to oneself.

The final lines, "and I swear that I don't have a gun," may be a reference to the band's frustration with media misrepresentations and the association with violent behavior in the music industry.

My favorite Nirvana album. Arguably their deepest, or perhaps most intimate, performance. Stripped down of all the electric sounds and rock star image. Every song is good. Plus the Meat puppets, and.. Leadbelly cover. A folk ending to a classic recording. Their heaviest album imo..
