My Sharona
Nirvana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ooh my little pretty one, my pretty one
When you gonna give me some time, Sharona?
Ooh you make my motor run, my motor run
Gun it comin' off of the line, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up from the touch of the younger kind
My-my-my-eye-eye-woo
Ma-ma-ma-my Sharona

Come a little closer, will ya huh
Close enough to look in my eyes, Sharona
Keeping it a mystery gets to me
Running down the length of my thigh, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up from the touch of the younger kind
My-my-my-eye-eye-woo
Ma-ma-ma-my Sharona
Ma-ma-ma-my Sharona

When you gonna give to me, give to me
Is it just a matter of time Sharona?
Is it de-de-destiny, destiny?
Or is it just a game in my mind, Sharona?
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up from the touch of the younger kind
My-my-my-eye-eye-woo
Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma
My-my-my-eye-eye-woo
Ma-ma-ma-my Sharona
Ma-ma-ma-my Sharona
Ma-ma-ma-my Sharona
Ma-ma-ma-my Sharona

Ooooooooooo-oh, my Sharona

Ooooooooooo-oh, my Sharona
Ooooooooooo-oh, my Sharona

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nirvana's cover of My Sharona suggest desire and lust towards a woman, with the singer addressing a woman named Sharona. He is persistent in his pursuit of her and implies a willingness to wait for her to give him a chance. He is fixated on her physical appearance and the way she makes him feel sexually. The line "I always get it up from the touch of the younger kind" implies that he is drawn to younger women. The singer acknowledges that his attraction to Sharona may be unhealthy or problematic, with lyrics like "such a dirty mind" and "is it just a game in my mind".

The lyrics of this song have been met with criticism for sexist and inappropriate content. The repeated phrase "my Sharona" objectifies and possessivizes the woman in question, and the singer's focus on her "mystery" and how she makes him feel sexually could be interpreted as demeaning. However, some have interpreted the song as a commentary on male desire and the societal expectations placed on men to constantly pursue women.
