On a Mountain
Nirvana Lyrics

==Early You Know You're Right==

I will never bother you
I will never promise to
I will never follow you
I will never bother you

Never speak a word again
I will crawl away for good

I won't move away from here
You won't be afraid of fear
No thought was put into this
Always knew it would come to this

Things have never been so swell
I have never failed to feel

Pain
Pain
Pain

You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right

I'm so warm and calm inside
I no longer have to hide
Let's talk about someone else
stinging skin begins to melt

Nothing ever bothers her
She just wants to love herself

I will move away from here
You won't be afraid of fear
No thought was put into this
Always knew it would come to this

Things have never been so swell
I have never failed to feel

Pain
Pain
Pain
Pain
Pain

You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right

You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right

You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right

You know you're right
You know you're right

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in "You Know You're Right" by Nirvana are complex and open to interpretation. The song is thought to be one of Kurt Cobain's last recordings before he committed suicide in 1994. The opening lines of the song, "I will never bother you, I will never promise to" could be seen as a plea to those who judge him, asking them not to worry about him or try to change him. He's letting them know that he won't bother them in return. There is a sense of detachment throughout the song, as if he's spoken all he needs to and is ready to move on.

As the song progresses, the theme of pain becomes evident with the repeated line "Pain, Pain, Pain." The lyrics hint at internal struggle and emotional pain, with lines like "I'm so warm and calm inside, I no longer have to hide" possibly referring to the heavy burden of maintaining a public persona. The line "You know you're right" could be seen as defiance towards those who didn't understand him or his music, and a recognition of his own talent and worth.

In the final verse of the song, Cobain seems to be exalting in his own isolation, saying that he's moving away and the listener won't be "afraid of fear." He also switches to third-person narration, discussing a woman who "just wants to love herself." This could be seen as a commentary on society and its obsession with external validation and appearance.

Overall, "You Know You're Right" is a haunting song that showcases Kurt Cobain's unique perspective and lyrical talent. The theme of pain and detachment resonates heavily with the listener and has made the song a fan favorite.

I remember finally getting my hands on a bootleg CD with this song on it around 98 knowing this could be an incredible song if there was the (at the time rumored) studio version. It was legend to us Nirvana nerds on the internet back then.

I remember when the studio recording finally leaked, I quickly burned it to a CD and ran straight to my friends house. We rolled and joint and listened. We felt like grunge rock Indiana Jones’s, lol.

This version has more power to me, but I do remember the holy shit moment when it came on the radio. We heard a shitty bootleg version previously but it was still amazing

Hector Palavecino

este tema fue en vivo y lo sacaron antes que "you know you're right" despues lo modificaron y quedo como lo conoces.

Gisselle ST

I love how heavy sounding this song is. Killer riffs!

Why do I actually like this one better than the actual “You know you’re right”??

Hafflockman

It's rougher

Wit is educated insolence.

Because it is sooooooooo much better!

The official version of this song always felt like over edited spliced different audio recordings together just to get one last song out of him.

Kris Frederick

He clearly says "all apologies" but the name "On the Mountain" gives it more power to me. especially knowing it was their last song. I heard it in the mid to late 90's and it just had a feeling to it.

Top of the mountain or something like that 😎

Such conviction, such pain n loss. Wished Kurt could have found the peace n happiness in this world...but I can understand why he didn't n felt that he couldn't go on....he just didn't want to feel anymore .....love the heaviness n distortion that ONLY NIRVANA could bring to this live version! Forever 27 Kurt!!
