Verse Chorus Verse
Nirvana Lyrics

Neither side is sacred
No one wants to win
Feeling so sedated
Think I'll just give in
Taking medication
Till our stomach's full
Neither side is sacred
Crawling in my hole

The grass is greener over here
You're the fog that keeps me clear
Re-inventing what we knew
Take the time and I'll be true
You're the reason I feel pain
Feels so good to feel again

Neither side is sacred
No one wants to win
Feeling so sedated
But I can't give in
Taking medication
Till our stomach's full
Feelin' so sedated
When I'm in my home

The grass is greener over here
You're the fog that keeps me clear
Re-inventing what we knew
Take the time and I'll be true
You're the reason I feel pain
Feels so good to feel again

Oh

Neither side is sacred
No one wants to win
Feeling so sedated
But I just give in
Taking medication
Till our stomach's full
Feelin' so sedated
Crawling in my home

The grass is greener over here
You're the fog that keeps me clear
Re-inventing what we knew
Take the time and I'll be true
You're the reason I feel pain
Feels so good to feel again

Oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nirvana's song "Verse Chorus Verse" discuss feelings of ambivalence and despondency towards life, as well as the allure of substance abuse as a means of coping. The repetition of "Neither side is sacred/No one wants to win" serves to emphasize the sense of hopelessness and apathy that the singer is feeling. They are caught in between two sides, unable to choose a side or find meaning in either, and the prospect of victory seems unattainable.

The line "Taking medication/Till our stomach's full" shows the reliance on drugs or alcohol to numb the pain and fill the void of emptiness. The line "You're the reason I feel pain/Feels so good to feel again" speaks to the self-destructive power of addiction, where even the pain of feeling something is preferable to the numbness of being sedated. The chorus, with its repetition of "The grass is greener over here/You're the fog that keeps me clear" suggests that the singer is looking for a way out of their misery but cannot see clearly enough to find it.

@patrickfry1000

Kurt had severe bipolar depression for sure, but he was also in serious physical pain because of his back.
“Taking medication till my stomachs full”
“Feeling so sedated when I’m in my home”
He refers to the treatment for his back pain as his relief from all pain.
“The grass is greener over here, you’re the fog that keeps it clear”
That’s a line people with bipolar disorder understand .
Whether he refers to a person, drug, or activity it doesn’t matter, the meaning is the same.
Bipolar depression creates a sort of foggy feeling in your brain that makes it hard to focus, care, or have the energy for anything.
You can barely follow your own thoughts!
Treatment of this can result in aspects of your life becoming clearer while at the same time obscuring other aspects. It can also refer to an unhealthy level of attachment in a relationship, you know the ones. The ones where you don’t know how to keep living after they’re gone.

Neither side is sacred, no one wants to win
Feeling so sedated, think I'll just give in
Taking medication 'till my stomach's full
Either side is sacred, growing in my home (Alt: Crawling in my hole)

Grass is greener, over here
You're the fog that keeps me clear
Reinventing, what would you do?
Take your time and I'll be true
You're the reason I feel pain
Feels so good to feel again

Neither side is sacred, no one wants to win
Feeling so sedated, but I can't give in
Even medication, 'till my stomach's full
Feeling so sedated, when I'm in my home

Grass is greener, over here
You're the fog that keeps me clear
Reinventing, what would you do?
Take your time and I'll be true
You're the reason I feel pain
Feels so good to feel again
