You Know You're Right
Nirvana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I will never bother you
I will never promise to
I will never follow you
I will never bother you
Never say a word again
I will crawl away for good

I will move away from here
You won't be afraid of fear
No thought was put into this
I always knew it would come to this
Things have never been so swell
And I have never failed to fail

Pain
Pain
Pain
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right

It's so warm and calm inside
I no longer have to hide
There's talk about someone else
Sterling silver begins to melt
Nothin' really bothers her
She just wants to love herself

I will move away from here
You won't be afraid of fear
No thought was put into this
I always knew it'd come to this
Things have never been so swell
And I have never failed to fail

Pain
Pain
Pain
Pain
Pain
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know your rights
You know your rights
You know your rights
You know your rights

You know your rights

Overall Meaning

At first glance, the lyrics to Nirvana's song "You Know You're Right" may seem repetitive and disjointed. However, upon listening closely, it becomes clear that the song is about a relationship that has come to an end. The singer is acknowledging that they will never bother their ex-partner again, and will move away to give them space. They recognize that the breakup was inevitable, and that they have failed in their relationship. The pain of the separation is evident in the repeating chorus of "Pain, pain, pain", emphasizing the emotional turmoil the singer is going through.

Despite the despair that is conveyed in the lyrics, there are also hints of hope. The singer notes that it is now warm and calm inside, indicating a sense of relief from the tension of the relationship. There is also mention of "talk about someone else", which could suggest a possibility for new beginnings and moving on from the past. However, the final repetition of "You know your rights" implies that the singer still feels a sense of entitlement and ownership over the relationship, even in its ending.

Overall, "You Know You're Right" is a raw and honest expression of the pain and complexity of a failed relationship. It acknowledges the difficulties of letting go and the confusion that accompanies such a major life change.

I don't care what anyone says this is the saddest Nirvana song ever in my opinion.

Years after Kurt died and this song came out on radios people burst into tears and vibed while doing so. It felt like the band was back after his death, it felt like Kurts soul came back to make one last song. all the memories fans had with him just sinked into them just like what's happening in this video, all the clips forming together of past memories. It felt like closure of his death. For me the song is basically his legacy song his ending of a chapter/ book.

Its crazy hes 56 years old if he was still alive. I wonder what wouldve happened if he lived. The last words he had said when he was singing was "pain"

Rip kurt cobain its crazy how long ago this happened

I deleted the suicide part idk it felt way too cheesy you guys can tell me what to put i guess and ill credit yo

The fact Kurt couldve been 57 today is sad :(

Dear Kurt

Today, you‘ve been gone for 30 years.
Even though you died years before I was born, you are my biggest inspiration, the reason I love music and the reason I‘m still breathing.
I can’t believe I will never get the chance to see you live and to sing, yell and scream along with you. I can’t believe I will never get to listen to new songs you write and I can’t believe I will never even get the chance to meet you.
But I guess, it is better to burn out than to fade away. You left a hole in the world.
You saved me and so many more, I wish we could have saved you.
I miss you every day.
Sleep well, Kurt, wherever you are. Last night, tonight and forever.
