All Apologies
Nirvana (MTV Unplugged In New York) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All apologies
What else could I say
Everyone is gay
What else could I write
I don't have the right
What else should I be
All apologies
In the sun
In the sun I feel as one
In the sun
In the sun
Married
Buried
I wish I was like you
Easily amused
Find my nest of salt
Everything's my fault
I take all the blame
Aqua seafoam shame
Sunburn, freezer burn
Choking on the ashes of her enemy
In the sun
In the sun I feel as one
In the sun
In the sun
Married
Married
Married
Buried yeah yeah yeah
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
All in all is all we are
The lyrics to Nirvana's "All Apologies" are introspective and contemplative, with the chorus expressing apologies while questioning what else could be done or said. The line "Everyone is gay" has been interpreted in various ways, with some suggesting Kurt Cobain was expressing acceptance of homosexuality, while others believe it was a sarcastic statement with a deeper meaning. The line "I wish I was like you, easily amused" may be a reference to the fact that some people can be content with simplistic pleasures, while Kurt is not.
The verses also convey a sense of guilt and self-blame, with the line "Everything's my fault" and "Choking on the ashes of her enemy". The latter may be a reference to Kurt's own struggles with fame and the media attention it attracted. The section "In the sun, in the sun, I feel as one" seems to express a desire for release and escape from the burdens of life. The repetition of "Married, buried" may be a commentary on the pressures of relationships or societal expectations.
