Brown sugar
Nitin Sawhney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let me tell you 'bout this girl, maybe I shouldn't
I met her in Philly and her name was Brown Sugar
See, we be making love constantly
That's why my eyes are a shade blood burgundy

The way that we kiss is unlike any other way
That I be kissin' when I'm kissin' what I'm missin'
Won't you listen?

[Chorus]
Brown Sugar babe, I gets high off your love
I don't know how to behave
I want some of your Brown Sugar
Sugar [Repeat: x4]
Oh oh

Oh sugar when you're close to me
You love me right down to my knees
And whenever you let me hit it
Sweet like the honey when it comes to me
Skin is caramel with those cocoa eyes
Even got a big sister by the name of Chocolate Thai

[Chorus]

Now that'd be how the story goes
Brown Sugar got me open, now I want some more
Always down for a menage-a-troi
But I think I'm a hit it solo
Hope my niggaz don't mind

Stick out my tongue and I'm bout
ready to hit this pretty gritty
bitty with persistence
Yo, I don't think ya'll hear me

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song "Brown Sugar" by Nitin Sawhney is a smooth, sultry, and sexual song about a girl the singer met named Brown Sugar in Philadelphia. He starts off by admitting that he probably shouldn't be talking about her, but he can't help himself. They have an intense sexual relationship that leaves him high off her love and with blood burgundy eyes. The way they kiss is unlike anything he's experienced before, and he wants the listener to pay attention.

As the song continues, the singer goes into detail about Brown Sugar's beauty with her caramel skin and cocoa eyes. He even mentions her big sister Chocolate Thai, highlighting the beauty of Black women of all shades. The sexual energy builds as he talks about wanting more of her, a menage-a-troi, but he's willing to hit it solo if needed.

The overall theme of the song is the sensual connection between two people and the intense desire that comes along with it. The lyrics paint a picture of a passionate and all-consuming love that leaves the singer unable to control himself. The song celebrates the beauty and sexual energy of Black women, specifically those of darker complexions, and highlights the singer's desire for them.

I love this album, one of my favourites. the COOLEST thing about THIS song, is the way Nitin Sawhney has made the Chorus MELODY quite LATE from the exact beat from 2nd chorus onwards..RAPPERS have been doing this for decades, and old MOTOWN recordings used to do this exact same thing. It was always a production technique to give those songs a certain "FEEL" of relaxation... it carried on to RAP and then what is known as "Modern day R & B".... intelligently done, he's making a point of it!!! Love your music, Nitin !!! BTW if anyone wants the LYRIC TRANSLATION, I do have it from years ago thanks to a friend of mine who comes from Bangladesh and his wife who stems from India.
