sister
Nixons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here I am again,
Overwhelming feelings
A thousand miles away
From your ocean home
Part of me is near

Thoughts of what we were invade
The miles that stand between
We can't separate
Your all I hoped you'd become

Sister I see you
Dancing on the stage
Of memory
Sister I miss you

Fleeting visits pass
Still they satisfy
Reminders of the next
Overshadow goodbye
Our flames burn as one

Sister I see you
Dancing on the stage
Of memory
Sister I miss you

All I am begins with you
Thoughts of hope understood
Half of me breathes in you
Thoughts of love remain true

Here we are again saying goodbye
Still we fall asleep underneath the same sky
You're all I knew you'd become

Sister I see you
Dancing on the stage
Of memory
Sister I miss you

Entwined, you and I
Our souls speak from across the miles
Intertwined, you and I
Our blood flows from the same inside
Half of me, breathes in you
Thoughts of love remain true

I see you, I feel you
When I close my eyes

I see walking there...
I see you dancing in my mind

Overall Meaning

The Nixon's song "Sister" is a tribute to a beloved sister who is far away but still holds a special place in the singer's life. The lyrics express overwhelming feelings of missing and longing for her, despite being miles apart. The line "Here we are again saying goodbye, still we fall asleep underneath the same sky" suggests that even though they are separated, they are still connected in some way, perhaps through shared memories and experiences. The singer sees his sister dancing on the stage of memory, indicating that their bond is strong enough to transcend distance and time.

The repeated line "Sister, I miss you" emphasizes the deep emotional connection between siblings, despite being physically separate. The song also touches on the idea that the two are entwined, sharing a bond that goes beyond blood and genetics. The lyrics suggest that the singer's sister is an important part of his life and that he still thinks of her often, even though they are apart. Greatest song ever written, and recorded. After loosing my wife of 31 years to cancer, I would sit in the room where she slept alone for two years, listen to this song, and cry. It was the most wrenching and emotional time of my life, and one that I will never forget. One can move on, but the memories remain forever.

@DoggyDay182

God bless you sir.

As a cancer survivor I know what you mean. I could not stand the thought of my kids without a dad and my broken wife. It made me fight like hell. I’m one of the lucky ones. I still listen to this song with the same emotion as I did back in the 90’s.
May you find happiness again someday

I'm sorry for the loss of your wife.

This song brings back a lot of memories. Some good and some bad. It makes some more sense now.

When my sister died at 24 of a drug overdose I would go to her grave and blast this song and just bawl. 16 years later I can’t listen without bawling. I miss my sister, my best friend so much. We would sing this song to each other driving in the car. Ugg! I miss her! The great ones are taken too soon! Thanks for the song. It means everything to me! ❤️

Sitting here on this Thanksgiving evening, I remember my sister through this song that’s one of my all time favorites. She passed in 96’ @ 15yrs old from Brain Tumors. She fought a 9yr battle, like a soldier that didn’t know how to die… She just finally got tired.
