When I'm Gone
No Address Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let's hop a train
And stow away
Down into Mexico

And on the way
As music plays
We'll let our beards grow tall
She don't like me singing songs
She don't want to sing along

It's still the same
She only likes me when I'm gone

I spilled my drink
Across the bar
Said, "baby what's your name?"

Her boyfriend stood
And smashed a bottle
Over my head

She don't like me singing songs
She don't want to sing along

It's still the same
She only likes me when I'm gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of No Address's song "When I'm Gone" involve the singer's desire for escape and freedom from his mundane life through a daring plan to hop a train and escape to Mexico, accompanied by the love interest mentioned throughout the song. The chorus suggests that the singer's relationship with this person is largely fickle, inconsistent, and even somewhat volatile, as she only seems to appreciate him when he's not around, and actively discourages his music-making. The second verse depicts a confrontation with a romantic rival, ending in violence and leaving the listener wondering what will become of the singer and his relationship.

On a deeper level, the song speaks to themes of escapism, romantic disillusionment, and the struggle to maintain one's sense of self in the midst of a confining or adversarial environment. The singer's desire to leave his current surroundings for a more thrilling and freewheeling existence in Mexico, reflects a common human desire for change and adventure, and highlights the dissatisfaction that one can feel in a stagnant or unsatisfying situation. Meanwhile, his complicated relationship with the woman in question suggests a push-and-pull dynamic that can arise in relationships, especially when one partner's desires or ambitions clash with the other's.

I remember this song from freshman year of high school! Glad I finally found it, because "la da di da di da" is not a lot to go on.

Saw you guys live in Des Moines back in 2005. Caught the drum stick you tossed our into the crowd. Been living over in Asia since 2010 and still have that drum stick on my office bookcase. Lots of good memories from back then. Still enjoy the music.

Iā€™m a fucking champion for finding this song after so long. About 15 minutes ago I got the ā€œla da dee da dee da dee da dee Down Downā€ part stuck in my head followed by a faint recollection of someoneā€™s boyfriend smashing a bottle over someoneā€™s headā€¦ and thatā€™s what I went on to find this song again. Great tune!

@chronicallybriana
