Hey Baby
No Doubt [The Singles 1992-2003] Lyrics

Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say,boys say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey
Hey baby baby
I'm the kinda girl that hangs with the guys
Like a fly on the wall with my secret eyes
Taking it in, try to be feminine
With my makeup bag watching all the sin
Misfit, I sit, lit up, wicked
Everybody else surrounded by the girls
With the tank tops and the flirty ways

I'm just sipping on chamomile
Watching boys and girls and their sex appeal
With a stranger in the face who says he knows my mom
And went to my high school

All the boys say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say, girls say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Hey baby baby
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Boys say, boys say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
All the boys get the girls in the back

I'm the one they feed upon
Give a bit a star is born
And if you had enough you'll get the pass
And you can tell your friends how you made it back
No matter what they say I'm still the same
Somehow everybody knows my name
And all the girls want to get with the boys
And the boys really like it

All the boys say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say, girls say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Hey baby baby
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Boys say, boys say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
All the boys get the girls in the back

Check it out, it's Bounty Killer, and no doubt
Jump on the stage makes me going crazy
After wards myself and one of them gorgeous ladies(that's right)
There is no need to be acting shady
Come on baby, hey hey baby
Jump on the stage makes me going crazy
After wards myself and one of them gorgeous ladies(yea man)
There is no need to be acting shady
Come on baby, hey hey baby
When you rock your hips you know that it amaze me
Got me off the hook and nothing else don't phase me
Can you be my one and only sunshine lady
If no, no maybe, hey

I'm just sipping on chamomile
Watching boys and girls and their sex appeal
With a stranger in the face who says he knows my mom
And went to my high school
(hey baby, hey baby)(that's right)

All the boys say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say, girls say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Hey baby baby (hey baby)
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Boys say, boys say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Can you be my one and only sunshine lady
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say, girls say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
When you rock your hips you know that it amaze me
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Boys say, boys say

Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
All the boys get the girls in the back

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of No Doubt's "Hey Baby" depict an observer who is watching and taking in the world around her, particularly the interactions and relationships between boys and girls. She observes from a distance, trying to be feminine and attractive like the other girls, but feeling like a misfit. She sees how boys and girls are drawn to each other and how they use their sex appeal to get attention. The chorus of the song is a repetitive "Hey baby" chant, which the boys and girls use to get each other's attention.

As the song progresses, the observer becomes more optimistic, realizing that even though she may not fit in with the popular crowd, she is still noticed and valued. The boys in particular seem to appreciate her, singing "Hey baby" to her and even giving her some time in the spotlight. The observer finishes the song reflecting on her experiences, watching the boys and girls around her and feeling content with who she is.

Overall, "Hey Baby" is a fun, upbeat song that explores themes of identity, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. It depicts the struggle to fit in and find one's place in the world, but ultimately expresses the importance of being true to oneself and finding happiness in one's own unique perspective.

I miss No Doubt alot.
I'm a black chick from the projects in Boston and I remember loving No Doubt from the start. I think telling friends my favorite song was Dont Speak at the time gave me my first glimpse into how people judge and label. Apparently I wasn't normal for liking this music because Gwen didn't look like me. I simultaneously felt how ok it was to be different though. Realized I couldn't be friends with people who ignored artistic beauty because of the color of the person creating it. That was 95 when I was 9 years old. Listening to that song feels the same now at 32. Imagine what I would have missed if I didn't dare to be different.

I hope artists really know how appreciated they are. 💛

I feel ya on that. I'm a black female and til this day, I get flak for liking what is considered "white music" I simply like what speaks to me, no matter the genre. Love No Doubt from the start

@amywhite9972

Lorie Jackson I truly understand. I attended a mostly black school so I loved rap, soul and pop. All types plus TLC, Envougue not sure of spelling but yeah I love it all. Once I got older, my country friends just didn't understand. Don't get me wrong, I love all types of music but I grew up on LL Cool J, Bobby Brown's group even though I can't remember the name of it, Whitney and of course Michael Jackson. Now at 46, when I hear those songs, I always think of Jeromy rapping in the Halls or Elton break Dancing in class complete with his red leather jacket and glove. I truly miss those days. Music today just isn't the same...

@iambackwithabang

almost same thing happened to me. except im Indian and was living in a small city in south India at that time.now im 32 too. and i now look back at my young self and want to tell that lil girl that "people are still the same(even when you grow up) and are judgemental af.so dont ever try to change yourself".they still give weird looks if you dont conform to their standards and notions about life.and growing up with different perspective about the world , only gives you the nametag of "weirdo/wannabe".but that wont matter as long as you stay true to yourself.
