This was a really helpful video as I prepare for my bible study class. It's so hard to wrap my mind around modern day idols because they are not necessarily something tangible the way they used to be back in biblical times. Behind the search for every idol lies the yearning for completion. To seek a special person or a thing to "add" to you to make yourself complete can only mean that you believe some form is missing, and by finding this, you will achieve completion in a form that you like. This is the purpose of an idol, that you will not look beyond it to the source of the belief that you are incomplete.

Start every morning with time alone with the LORD - Make it a dedicated time without your phone or any distractions. "Guard" that time - If you don't the devil will steal that time away. Spend time in prayer & then being quiet before Him so he can "speak" to your heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate the Word of God before you read the Bible. I usually start with a devotional (Charles Stanley's Intouch.org - if you need one) and read the Bible verses in that devotional. Many times I continue to read the verses and I will stop on a verse that triggers something I am currently dealing with. My goal isn't just to get through the devotional but to have the Lord "speak" through the verses and what He is showing me in the devotional also. I hope this helps.

There are various methods and techniques to perform prayer or worship ranging from subtle to intense from mental involvement to mental and physical involvement. It stimulates the release of certain bio chemicals that has an impact on the well being of our physical and mental health. So if we only look into the biological perspective the question about whom we worship does not arises as it is just an innate physiological process. I would say that the 6th one is not the smartphone on itself but that the virtual world has become for many the alternative to the spiritual.

Instead leading a spiritual life, they instead dwell to the virtual life as alternative to connect with others, seeking fulfilment.

I can see that. I think our digital lives are quickly taking over our analog lives. I don't think digital is all bad, there's a lot of good that can come from it. But I see it can become an ultimate thing that replaces our deep connections with others and with God outside the digital world.

Idol is a manifestation of ideas about some material or immaterial concept. This manifestation may be in the form tangible objects, images, place, scriptures, books, or intangible information or ideas about a concept that is understood by us using our cognitive abilities and humanly perceptions.
Hindus don’t worship idols, believing them to be Gods but as physical reminders stimulus or alarms of spirituality. That is why they are conscripted that is put into service and immersed when not in use. Rather the statues and images are physical reminders of God to help them focus on an aspect of prayer or meditation. This tradition is reflected in Verse 12.5 of the Bhagavad Gita, which states that only a few have the time and mind to ponder and fix on the unmanifested Absolute (abstract formless Brahman). As such, it is much easier to focus on qualities, virtues, aspects of a manifested representation.

I wish preachers can stop teaching ppl about the good things God can do and teach us more how we can become better in our days life and what we should do after we leave church . Preachers are scare to talk to the church about bad things. I wish they can teach us these things about idolatry. I drive Lyft and have to alot because I got bills. I pray and look for jobs but God never comes through. Is God so jealous that he would let everything fall by the waist side to prove a point? I'm single and I do this because it's all I have for a job and it's hard to make decent so I drive long hours. Is God punishing me and is this driving an idol since I do it to pay my bills? God always confuses me because it's like He doesn't want me to work too much but at the same time what I need is not being provided if I don't work enough.

You view of sin is too low. Sin isn't a minor indiscretion. We were created to live in union (oneness) with God. Sin is willingly entering into union with something or someone other than God. Because of our sin we are united with death. God can't simply obliterate sin because than it would destroy us.

To redeem humanity, to restore union with his creation, God entered into our union with death. He honored our choice by becoming one with flesh and embraced the consequences that came with it. He took on the wages of sin and death… And conquered sin, death itself. The union with death that once held us captive no longer has power over us. He didn’t just die for our mistakes (He did that too). He broke the bonds of our union.

An all powerful God can simply wipe sins out without any conditions. God is not dependent on anything or any law of universe.

@Ehsanul Faiz Jesus willingly gave up his life on the cross. Yes his creation put him there, but he allowed them. He could have stopped it at any point. But choose not too. We was a willing sacrifice for our sins.

The Christian faith hinges on Jesus not only dying, but also resurrecting. The Gospels are eyewitness accounts to Jesus' resurrection. Many of the eyewitness's were even killed because of their testimony. Yet they still held to the fact that Jesus died and than rose again.

To answer your question we aren't calling someone God who has died. We are following a God that willingly died for our sins and rose again defeating sin and death.

It's a tough one. I think it comes down to not allowing our comfort to overtake our calling. Comfort isn't a bad thing. It only becomes a bad thing when we would rather be comfortable than follow God.

No. What you place your hope in is what you will end up worshiping. Where you spend your time CAN be an indicator of where you've placed your hope. But it's not a math equation that you need to spend more time praying than your hobbies.

Not sure if I agree with you 1oo%, as the things you mentioned in your list are a distraction from God indeed. But unless they get worshiped as a deity it is not Idol Worship. Worship is an act of religious devotion usually directed towards a deity. For many, worship is not about an emotion, it is more about a recognition of God.

Interestingly enough, but Idol, and Worship used independently have two different meaning or usages as I should say, and as you mentioned "Worship simply means to give worth to something with our life " I would agree, however, combining the two "Idol and Worship" IMO points to one, and only one aspect; Bowing down to lift up, in Praise, in Reverence, a graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or on earth, to bow down to them, to serve them: them being their iniquities of those that hate God.
Gods not going to make it as easy as singing a song or rushing to the cell phone every time it rings e.g; to commit a spiritual death, because that's what Idol Worship to a Christian is.
We all commit sin, but we don't all die a spiritual death every day.
It's just thoughts IMO from a Theological stand point whereas you may not have encountered before.

I think we are defining worship differently. As you say many people define worship as a religious act of devotion to a deity. But I would argue that EVERYONE worships. Worship simply means to give worth to something with our life. We worship when we sing songs to God, but we also worship in the ways we choose to live our lives. I like how you said "worship is more about a recognition of God". I think that's very true, but that's not just contained to a strictly religious experience. My worship should be recognizing God in all aspects of my life. The "idols" I listed I know aren't what most would consider idols. However they often take the place of our worship of God. We "recognize" them as the center of our life instead of God. That would fit the description of what ancient idolatry did.

Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you."

Too much entertainment sure. But there's nothing in the Bible that says you can't enjoy a concert, watch some YouTube, or listen to music. Entertainment has it's place. We've just elevated it to an unhealthy level in our culture.

Just to be clear, No where in 10 commandments mentions to worship Jesus Christ. That is something that was added by his followers. Jesus Christ send all thanks, obedience and adoration back to his Heavenly Father. Taking no credit that didn't belong to him but the One that sent Him. No pursuit of Jesus Christ is needed, he came did his part and was force to leave.

To worship the Father is to worship Jesus. Jesus IS God. To say "No pursuit of Jesus Christ is needed" is missing the point of the Gospel (and the whole Bible). Jesus is the point.

This is really tricky stuff. Even portrayals of Jesus in movies fall into this. Celebrities are the biggest culprits. But its kind of not their fault. Most people are kind of hopeless to this kind of thing.
