Moon in my Mouth
No Joy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been thinking
The way it’s so natural
But if we slip
It’s undone
I've anything else goes
We never really wanted
Anything else goes
He doesn't even want her
Matt get on and watch a ride
I think its mine so find it
Alright it all
So you feel dumb
And maybe next time
Will be the last time

We could drop down to die
Alright it's nice it feels fine

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of "Moon in my Mouth," No Joy reflects on the essence of thoughts and how they can be both natural and fleeting. The act of thinking is portrayed as something that comes effortlessly or instinctively, almost as if it is part of the human nature. However, the lyrics also hint at a potential vulnerability or fragility in this process. One wrong move, one slip, and everything that has been thought or contemplated can come undone. This suggests that while thinking might seem natural, it is also a delicate act that requires caution.

Moving into the second verse, the lyrics explore the notion of desires and wants. The phrase "anything else goes" implies a sense of openness or willingness to explore different possibilities. It suggests that there is an absence of specific desires or goals, as if the individuals involved are not entirely sure of what they truly want. Furthermore, there is a reference to someone who does not even desire the affection of another person. This could be interpreted as a sense of detachment or apathy, where one person lacks interest in pursuing a romantic connection.

The following lines introduce the name "Matt" and mention watching a ride. The exact meaning behind these references is not explicitly clear, but they could signify an individual named Matt observing a situation rather than actively participating in it. This could imply a detached or passive role, perhaps highlighting the theme of disengagement or nonchalance throughout the song. The phrase "I think it's mine so find it" could suggest someone searching for their place or purpose within this context, trying to make sense of their role or influence.

The final lines of the song express a sense of ambivalence or uncertainty. The words "so you feel dumb" hint at a potential realization or self-awareness of one's own shortcomings or inadequacies. This introspective moment is followed by the phrase "maybe next time will be the last time," which suggests a sense of finality or ending looming in the future. The idea of "dropping down to die" could be interpreted metaphorically as surrendering or letting go of something, possibly an attachment or expectation. Despite these contemplative moments, the lyrics end on a more positive note, stating that it feels nice and fine. This contrasting duality between uncertainty and contentment adds depth and complexity to the overall meaning of the song.

Okay, listen to the main riff of this song and the little quiet ending and listen to the last minute of the song "Swallow" by My Bloody Valentine. I sense an influence.
