Chasing Rainbows
No Use for a Name Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just heard the news today,
Let yourself down once again
Trusted your feelings in a place that no one goes
Will you do anything,
To satisfy your so-called friend?
There's something you ought to know,
Before you explode
All I want to do is make sure you stop chasing rainbows
Trusting those around you is an easy thing to do
I'm not saying don't believe in someone that you don't know
Just don't go on thinking that the whole world tells the truth

It's all fucked up,
Being reserved and quiet
She doesn't understand the message that you send
Don't give it all away somewhere, someday there's someone
Who can replace that state of mind, you never give it time (never)

All I want to do is make sure you stop chasing rainbows
Letting everybody crawl inside your heart and mine
Kicking you is easy when you're down that's where the weak know
To release their anger on someone who will not try

To stand up,
And give them a fight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to No Use For A Name's song "Chasing Rainbows" open with the singer hearing news that seems to have disappointed him/her. The singer then reflects on a past mistake of trusting someone he/she shouldn't have trusted. The singer warns the subject of the song not to do the same mistake, to stop chasing rainbows and instead to trust wisely. The song reflects on the experiences of being hurt by another's betrayal, and the frustration that comes with it. The lyrics also suggest that the person in question might be too trusting or possibly even naive, reminding them that not everyone can be trusted, and that whilst it's important to have faith in others, one must also be careful.

The song warns against letting everybody crawl inside your heart and mind because it makes you an easy target when they want to release their anger on someone. It's a reminder that being too open might cause too much pain. It's important to stand up and fight for yourself. The message of the song is quite clear: be cautious with who you trust, be careful with whom you let into your life, and don't give up or let people change you.

Man, the chorus was one of the most anthemic in the pop punk genre. I remember really relating to it as a teenager. RIP, you taught me a lot growing up, with your lyrics.

Can't believe it's been 5 years already.. I will never forget the day when I first heard the news about Tony passing away and me just sitting on my grandmother's porch that night with an acoustic guitar and singing to nothing but No Use. Your music helped me get through so many hard times in life and thought me how to grow through things throughout the years by playing and writing music. Thank you for the songs, memories and inspiration, you're greatly missed my friend <3
