On The Outside
No Use for a Name Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll see you on the outside and we'll
Never be the same
After all that's happened what is it that
We've gained?
Well I've made mistakes before and
Never lived them down
After all you've done for me i'm bound
(don't say another word)

To see you on the outside where we can
Both be sane
(you're speaking for yourself)
I'm bleeding on the inside
A place you might have been but now I
Know I'll (never be the same)

Well I heard you got a place and it's far
Away from here
Reality has sunken in now confirming
All my fears
I'm not gonna track you down and it's
Too late to stop
Thinking 'bout the time that we have lost
(I'm happy without you)

I'm trying to forget you and everything
We had (we didn't stand a chance)
We're miserable and it's true I haven't
Learned a thing
But now I know I'll trust no one else

(There was a time when we were back
And forth, it wasn't easy)
I guess that we're back where we belong
One thing is for sure, it wasn't strong

I'll see you on the outside where we can
Both feel shame
(you've never been more right)
I'm dying on the inside, you're never
Coming back

And now I know whatever we go through
My heart is stuck with you

Overall Meaning

The chorus of "On The Outside" by No Use For A Name speaks about the desire to meet someone on the outside, after they have supposedly made mistakes and become different people. The singer wonders what they have gained from all that has happened between them. The verse talks about the singer's bleeding inside and the fact that they will never be the same. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the person they thought they knew has changed, or maybe they've come to realize things about themselves. The bridge highlights the fact that the two were not always on the same page, and it wasn't easy, but now they seem to be back where they belong.

The lyrics seem to paint a picture of two people who had a relationship that went south because of various factors, including changes in one or both people. The singer acknowledges that they've made mistakes before and never lived them down. This suggests the possibility of the other person being unable to forgive or move on from past indiscretions. The reference to bleeding on the inside might imply that the singer is hurting more than they are letting on. They go on to say that they've heard that the other person has moved away, and that they are trying to forget everything they had shared. However, the final words in the song, "My heart is stuck with you," suggest that the singer may still harbor feelings for this person and that they will never fully move on.

@Charles NotBronson Rob from strung out has more technical solos, and both their guitarists sound better melodically, but ur right about Prop, there's something about their aggression and the way the band sounds as a whole, and the way they have aged like wine getting more n more talented as the albums progress thru time, it's fucking insane.
I've been obsessed w SO since Twisted by Design, I didn't really start to REALLY like Prop until Potemkin. Lol I've seen SO 18 times in 24 years across 6 states, quit two jobs to see em in the process lol they're just my favorite band. Can't help it. Hearing Firecracker or Too Close to See just does something to my soul ya know?
And it's that super talented, melodic-beyond-words songwriting.
Sucks that they got all weird on their last 2 albums though. First 2 that I haven't absolutely loved.
And that's what I was saying about Prop, NOBODY gets THAT much better as time goes on. But they did.
Maybe it's Sulynn joining them a couple albums ago, but Jordy on them drums has aged like wine as well. I do however, like Chris vocals better on Less Talk and Today's Empires the best. Only thing that hasn't gotten better over time is his vocal style.
And regarding NOFX, I just can't stand what they have turned into.
Ya know about a decade ago, or actually like 2015, I never thought Mike's ego could get any bigger, and that he couldn't turn into even more of a douche than he already was. But it happened. He came out as a bi, cross dressing, whatever, just, I dunno man. The only REALLY good albums they've put out this century is pump up the Valium and Wolves in Wolves clothing IMO.
All their shit from the 90s is some of the most important punk rock in the history of the genre, the inspiration for so many bands, I just don't like very much Post-George W Bush NOFX. Some of the ablums are straight up flops all the way thru with only 1 or 2 listen-able trqcks.
I think Mike is washed up unfortunately, and it hurts to even THINK that, let alone say it?
But one of my fave vocalists ever wrote a song called murder the government, and now he'll spit on you for not voting? And voting for a socialist at that? Yeah, cuz more government is so damn punk bro lol I hate it what he's turned into.
Annnnnnd this book is the product of what happens when u wake up with night terrors at 5am in Cleveland Ohio 🤣🤣🤣

It's funny been inside and out
'cause when you are inside
you're still actually outside aren't you?
Then you can say when you're outside,
you're inside because you're always inside your head

I'll see you on the outside and we'll never be the same
after all that's happened what is it that we've gained?
I've made mistakes before and never lived them down
after all you've done for me I'm bound

Reality has sunken in now confirming all my fears
Not gonna track you down but it's too late to stop
thinking 'bout the time that we have lost
(I'm happy without you)

I'm trying to forget you and everything we had
(We didn't stand a chance)
We're miserable and it's true we haven't learned a thing

This is one of my favorite NUFAN songs, actually the first i ever heard of them on my best friend's PHYSICAL FATNESS III CD. One of the few songs that permanently hooked me up to punk rock. R.I.P Tony. You are a genuine loss to the scene. You're talent and music will dearly be missed. :-(
