Ironically, this song found me as I was tearing myself down to examine why I kept driving people away. My ideal friendship was one where two people could sit comfortably in silence while we did our own thing. I assumed it was me being either an ambivert or introvert, but it’s actually because I’m too much of a people pleaser. I love meeting new people, but in all my 21 years, my conversations were spent making the other person the topic of the conversation rather than sharing anything about myself. Honestly, it felt more like I was interrogating them, and for some reason it got into my head that, if I did this, they would be more inclined to like me. I became so hyper focused on making sure I was polite and didn’t cross the other person’s boundaries that I saw talking as a performance rather than what it was: a casual conversation. It drove me away from wanting to talk to people at all. The thought of having to constantly put on a performance was exhausting. I wish I could go back and do it all over because my younger years were filled with so much sadness and frustration and loneliness - and I never knew why. Now I have to unlearn every toxic trait that comes with being a people pleaser and play catchup to others who naturally learned how to be themselves. The bittersweet part of it all is that, while I’m changing for me - it still feels like I’m changing myself so others will like me better. It makes me hopeful and sad, and that’s how this song feels. The music sounds so lighthearted and confident, but the lyrics are quite literally the holes in that false confidence.
