Their first three albums ('In a Time of Blood and Fire', 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination' and 'The Sacred Talisman') feature the former vocalist Anders Zackrisson, while the newer albums are sung by Johnny Lindkvist. Also the musical style has changed a bit during the years; some demo's were something more like death metal, but then the three first cd releases pure melodic power metal, and on "Afterlife" they took a bit heavier approach with influences of true heavy metal like Masterplan and Dream evil and even some thrash metal riffs, though the melodic choruses were kept right in the core of the songs.
They have released a few more albums since, with the latest ones being 'Grand Illusion' that came in 2005 and '8th Sin' that came out in 2007. The band keeps on fighting on and remains one of Scandinavia's best known power metal bands.
On June 21st, 2008 it was announced that guitarist Nils Norberg has left the band. On May 9th, 2010, Chris Rörland joined Nocturnal Rites. A video of him playing and Fredrik Mannberg talking a bit about him can be seen here.
Faceless God
Nocturnal Rites Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A septic grain turns the flesh into sand
The night is slain, the light is gone
I feel, how the vision fails me
Let them bleed, then suck them dry
A severed dream turns will to submission
This dying world, will bring rebirth
They kill, they kill for pleasure
The pathway is open
A choice must be made
I'm not afraid
Call out my name
Faceless god
A soul for a crown
His eyes are the color of blood
A life for a throne
Faceless God
Rejoice in sin, come on in
Repent no more but the scarring remains
Poisoned sheep, the flock has died
I know, how their blood still stains me
A prophecy, it comes to life
The curtain falls and out comes the truth
Whole death awaits, the memory comes
I know how the vision failed me
The lyrics to Nocturnal Rites's song 'Faceless God' paint a picture of a dark and twisted world, where the night has triumphed over the light and a sense of hopelessness pervades. The singer finds himself in a darkened room, which could represent isolation, depression or even death itself. The idea of a "septic grain" turning "flesh into sand" occurs twice in the song, which could imply that something toxic or dangerous has taken hold of the person's life, causing a sense of decay or deterioration. They express their frustration and despair at the state of the world, including the violence and killing that seems to be happening for no reason other than pleasure.
The chorus of the song appears to appeal to a higher power, perhaps a deity or a force that can provide salvation or redemption in the face of all this darkness. This figure is referred to as a "faceless god," whose eyes are "the color of blood." The repetition of the phrase "a soul for a crown" and "a life for a throne" may suggest that the singer is willing to make a sacrifice in order to attain this redemption, even if it means giving up everything they hold dear. The song ends on a sombre note, with the singer reflecting on a lost opportunity or a failed vision, unsure what the future may hold.
