The song Infidelity by Nodes Of Ranvier is a song about betrayal and unfaithfulness. It starts with the lyrics “Worthless and insincere - our vows, so quickly disappear.” This line is talking about the vows the couple made to each other in their marriage, but how they quickly disappeared due to the unfaithfulness of one or both parties. The next line, “Desolation we've brought willingly, we are the harlots spreading infirmity,” refers to the fact that this unfaithfulness is a choice that they made and willingly spread to others like a disease.
The following lines “Surrounded by mountains of affliction, stumble blindly in the darkness we create, worship the counterfeit,” describe the state that they are in. They are surrounded by troubles and are blindly stumbling through the darkness because they have lost their way. They turned from the truth and instead worshiped the counterfeit version of love and commitment which they deemed as the “right” thing to do. The chorus repeats the theme of their minds decaying and their hearts descending into depravity as a result of their unfaithfulness.
The second verse further explains their situation as being condemned by their betrayal, deceived by false desire, and moving the boundaries of morality. The line “screaming with arrogance, we can't hear wisdom screaming back” alludes to the fact that they were screaming with their actions of betrayal but were so lost in their own arrogance that they disregarded the voice of reason and wisdom. The bridge of the song speaks of judgment and mercy and the need for forgiveness for disloyalty. The song ends on a note of doom and despair as it refers to the abomination filling the earth and the inevitability of judgment.
