Hey Hey My My
Noel Gallagher/Oasis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey hey my my
Rock and roll will never diet
Here's more to the picture than meets the eye
Hey hey my my

You're out of the blue and into the black
They give you this but you pay for for that
And when you die, no you don't come back
'Cause your out of the blue and into the black

My my hey hey
Rock and roll is here to stay

It's better to burn out than to fade away
My my hey hey

Overall Meaning

The song "Hey Hey My My" by Oasis is actually a cover of the Neil Young song "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" which was released in 1979. Oasis added their own unique spin to the song, but the lyrics remain the same. The song talks about the timeless nature of rock and roll and how it will never die. The line "Rock and roll is here to stay" is a nod to a classic rock and roll song of the same name by Danny and the Juniors. The lead singer of Oasis, Liam Gallagher, has spoken about his admiration for Neil Young and how he wanted to pay tribute to one of his favorite artists by covering the song.

The first section of the song talks about how there is more to rock and roll than meets the eye. It's not just about the music, but it's also about the lifestyle and the culture that surrounds it. The second section discusses how society tries to control us by giving us things, but at a cost. The final section talks about how rock and roll may fade away, but it's better to burn out than to fade away.

I was at this gig, what a day that was.

I remember Doves and Happy Mondays playing beforehand. We waited in the middle of the crowd getting baked as the sun beamed down. We were in jackets with the hoods up because of the amount of water, beer and god knows what else being thrown around, a one point I remember a bunch of bananas in a bag and a block of edam!

We eventually gave up and came out for air, relocating ourselves somewhere near the front on the left as you look at the stage.

Fantastic gig, fantastic memories. RIP JT.

Ian Lages

Yes! I think this show (Wembley 2000) is one of my favorite gigs of Oasis. Supersonic in Wembley 2000 was perfect. Thank you by watch. Who is JT?

The Hat

@Ian Lages a friend who was at the gig, sadly taken from us by cancer at the age of 25.

Ian Lages

@The Hat Oh, sorry! My condolences for you, stay young mate.
