Mna Na H-Eireann
Nolwenn Leroy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tá bean in Éirinn a phronnfadh séad domh is mo sháith le n-ól
Is tá bean in Éirinn is ba bhinne léithe mo ráfla ceoil
Ná seinm théad; atá bean in Éirinn is níorbh fhearr léi beo
Mise ag léimnigh nó leagtha I gcré is mo thárr faoi fhód

Tá bean in Éirinn a bheadh ag éad liom mur' bhfaighfinn ach póg
Ó bhean ar aonach, nach ait an scéala, is mo dháimh féin leo;
Tá bean ab fhearr liom nó cath is céad dhíobh nach bhfagham go deo
Is tá cailín spéiriúil ag fear gan Bhéarla, dubhghránna cróin.

Tá bean a déarfadh dá siulfainn léi go bhfaighinn an t-ór,
Is tá bean 'na léine is is fearr a méin ná na táinte bó

Le bean a bhuairfeadh Baile an Mhaoir is clár Thír Eoghain,
Is ní fheicim leigheas ar mo ghalar féin ach scaird a dh'ól

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nolwenn Leroy's song Mna Na H-Eireann express admiration for the women of Ireland. The first stanza speaks of a woman in Ireland who could provide the singer with wealth and pleasure from her company. However, there is another woman in Ireland who is more enamored by the beauty of the music and singing than material gain. The singer is willing to dance or lie flat on the ground, admiring this woman, who values life above all else. In the second stanza, the singer imagines a woman who would value a kiss more than any gold, who would prefer to spend time with the singer than attending a market. The final verse describes a woman who can cure any ailment but the singer's obsession with her beauty. Collectively, these verses suggest that the women of Ireland are unique and possess a depth of character.

Nolwenn Leroy's song Mna Na H-Eireann was originally written in the Irish language and composed by poet Seán Ó Riordáin and composer Peadar Ó Riada. It was first performed in an episode of a television program called “Ós Ceann an Gleanna” in 1967. The song became a symbol of Ireland's unique cultural identity and was popularized by performances like Alan Stivell's version in 1971. Here are some interesting facts about this song:

Is tá bean in Éirinn is ba bhinne léithe mo ráfla ceoil
And there's a woman in Ireland to whom my music is sweeter than any composed by another.

Not a note would I play, were there in Ireland a woman who did not prefer me alive.

Mise ag léimnigh nó leagtha i gcré is mo thárr faoi fhód
I'd be leaping, or lying in the clay, with my shroud upon me, under the sod.

There's a woman in Ireland I'd be jealous of, if I didn't get a kiss from her.

From the woman at the fair, no news could keep me away, and my wealth in my own possession.

The woman I love best, even despite a hundred battles, is one I'll never get.

Is tá cailín spéiriúil ag fear gan Bhéarla, dubhghránna cróin.
And there's a spirited girl with an Englishman, a dark frown on her.

Tá bean a déarfadh dá siulfainn léi go bhfaighinn an t-ór,
There's a woman who would say, were I to walk with her, that I'd find the gold.

Is tá bean 'na léine is is fearr a méin ná na táinte bó
And there's a woman in her shift who is finer of appearance than the dairy-maids.

Le bean a bhuairfeadh Baile an Mhaoir is clár Thír Eoghain,
For the woman who would bother Ballymagorry and the County of Tyrone,

Is ní fheicim leigheas ar mo ghalar féin ach scaird a dh'ól
I see no cure for my own complaint, except a drink from a glass.

"Mná na h-Éireann" in Irish, Below is an English translation.

There's a woman in Erin who'd give me shelter and my fill of ale;
There's a woman in Ireland who'd prefer my strains to strings being played;
There's a woman in Erin and nothing would please her more Than to see me burning or in a grave lying cold.

There's a woman in Erin who'd be mad with envy if I was kissed By another on fair-day, they have strange ways, but I love them all;

There are women I'll always adore, battalions of women and more And there's this sensuous beauty and she shackled to an ugly boar.

There's a woman who promised if I'd wander with her I'd find some gold A woman in night dress with a loveliness worth more than the woman Who vexed Ballymoyer and the plain of Tyrone; And the only cure for my pain I'm sure is the ale-house down the road.

Sa musique m’a aidé à me relever. Merci bel ange ❤
