Total Eclipse
Nomi Klaus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Argue about what they've got
Making the planet so hot
Hot as a holocaust
Blow up
Everything's gonna go up
Even if you don't show up
Total eclipse
It's a total eclipse
It's a total eclipse of the sun
Can't come to grips with the total eclipse
Just a slip of the lips and you're done
Fall out
Nobody left to crawl out
If someone calls
We're all out
Turning in to French fries
Last dance
Let the entire cast dance
Do the dismembered blast dance
As we get atomized!
Total eclipse
It's a total eclipse
It's a total eclipse of the sun
Can't come to grips with the total eclipse
Just a slip of the lips and you're done
The song "Total Eclipse" by Nomi Klaus can be interpreted as a commentary on society, particularly on the damaging effects of human greed and self-centeredness on the planet. The first verse suggests that big shots (i.e. people with power and influence) are too focused on their own possessions and interests to care about the planet, which is being destroyed as a result. The reference to the holocaust adds a powerful image to this, suggesting that the planet is being devastated in a similar way to how humans have devastated each other in the past. The second verse paints a picture of the ultimate consequence of this greed and neglect: a nuclear apocalypse. The image of everything "blowing up" is contrasted with the idea that people might not be present to witness it. In fact, the image of them turning into French fries (a reference to the intense heat of a nuclear explosion) suggests that they may already be gone.
The chorus, which repeats the idea of a "total eclipse," suggests a kind of reckoning- a moment when the full impact of these destructive tendencies will be felt. The reference to being unable to "come to grips with" the eclipse suggests that people will be unable to fully comprehend or accept the situation until it is too late. The final verse suggests that even at this point, people will continue to dance and celebrate, almost as a form of defiance in the face of destruction. The image of the "dismembered blast dance" further emphasizes the chaos and violence of the situation.
Overall, "Total Eclipse" presents a bleak and powerful message about humanity's potential for destruction. While it is a dark vision, it also has a certain urgency to it- a plea for people to recognize the gravity of the situation and take action before it is too late.

My Greek grandma showed me this when I was a kid. She told me she admired him. She was sucha modern woman. With modern views and values. She was ahead of her time. Strong woman. A rebel. I should have honored her when she was alive a lot more than I did

My friend you are not alone in that respect. I had a wonderful grandmother who brought me up and I wish I'd honored her more than I did. We had wonderful time together. I met Klaus once at a party we spoke very briefly I can't even say we had a full conversation but he was amazing to look at. I shall ramble no longer.
