Tell me darlin' true
To me you are the sea
Vast as you can be
And deep the shade of blue
When you're feelin' low
Oh, to whom else do you go?
I'd give you my last shirt
Because I love you so
Now if my sky should fall
Would you even call?
I've opened up my heart
I never want to part
I'm givin' you the ball
When I look in your eyes
I can feel the butterflies
I will love you when you're blue
But tell me darlin' true
What am I to you?
Now if my sky should fall
Would you even call?
I've opened up my heart
I never wanna part
Givin' you the ball
When I look in your eyes
I can feel the butterflies
Could you find a love in me?
Would you carve me in a tree?
Don't fill my heart with lies
I will love you when you're blue
Tell me darlin' true
What am I to you?
The song "What Am I to You?" by Norah Jones is a heartfelt inquiry about the true nature of a relationship. The opening line poses a question to the object of her affection, asking what their connection truly means to the other person. Jones then declares her feelings, likening her partner to the limitless expanse of the sea and stating that she would do anything for them, including giving the proverbial shirt off her back. She then poses a hypothetical scenario, asking whether her partner would be there for her in her time of need.
The bridge of the song features a beautiful metaphor, where Jones describes feeling butterflies in her stomach when she looks into the eyes of her love interest. She reaffirms her commitment to them, pledging to love them even when they are feeling blue. Finally, she asks the question once more, requesting that her partner is truthful in their response.
As a whole, "What Am I to You?" is a song that speaks to the vulnerability that comes with being in a new relationship. It is a yearning for honesty and a desire to truly understand the depth of feelings between two people.
