Carousel
Has got you under it's spell
Moving so fast, but
Going nowhere
Up 'n' down
Ferris wheelTell me how does it feel
To be so high
Looking down here
Is it lonely?
Lonely
Lonely
Did the clown
Make you smile
He was only your fool for a while
Now he's gone back home
And left you wandering there
Is it lonely?
Lonely
Lonely
In the song "Carnival Town," Norah Jones sings about the mesmerizing and sometimes deceptive atmosphere of a carnival. The lyrics "Round 'n' round/Carousel/Has got you under it's spell/Moving so fast, but/Going nowhere" suggest that the riders on the carousel are enchanted by its circular motion, but in reality, they are not going anywhere. Similarly, the "Up 'n' down/Ferris wheel" provides the riders with a high-reaching sensation, but in the end, they come back down to the same place they started. The singer is asking the carnival-goers if they feel lonely amidst the commotion and excitement of the carnival.
The lyrics "Did the clown/Make you smile/He was only your fool for a while/Now he's gone back home/And left you wandering there" suggest that the clown provided temporary entertainment and humor but ultimately left the person alone again. The contrast between the fleeting experiences at the carnival and the lasting feelings of loneliness creates a melancholic tone.
Overall, the song portrays the illusion of happiness and the reality of loneliness. The carnival may provide a temporary escape from loneliness, but in the end, it leaves the person feeling alone once again.

on The Nearness of You
The Nearness Of You - Camille Thurman -Lyrics
Its not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
When you're in my arms
And I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams do come true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness of you
Saxophone Musical Interlude
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness, the nearness of you
