I'll Be Gone
Norah Jones Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Gonna make it my home
It's where I belong
When I get where I'm going
I'll be gone, I'll be gone
When my heart
That it can't keep time
Don't you cry
When I get where I'm going
I'll be gone, I'll be gone
Wish I could tell you that the sun was gonna shine
I got a feelin' that I still won't change my mind
Runnin' out of time
There's a place
On a mountain
You can take my bones
When I go home
When I get to where I'm going
I'll be gone, I'll be gone
I wanna tell you that it's all gonna be just fine
But I don't wanna waste any more of your time
You didn't waste mine
The lyrics of Norah Jones's song "I'll Be Gone" are open to interpretation but seem to touch on themes of homesickness, longing, and coming to terms with mortality. The first stanza sets the scene as the singer expresses a desire to leave their current place of residence and make their way to a new location that they feel is more suited to them. The repetition of "I'll be gone" at the end of each verse suggests that the singer is longing to leave their current situation behind and start anew.
The second verse seems to speak to the weariness that comes with life's struggles, as the singer alludes to their heart being "tired" and not being able to "keep time." It may also suggest a kind of resignation or acceptance of the inevitability of death. However, the repeated refrain of "I'll be gone" could also be interpreted as the singer asserting their agency over their own life and death, suggesting that they will choose to leave when their time has come.
