Nightingale
Norah Jones Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Of a love that once belonged
Nightingale, tell me your tale
Was your journey far too long?
Does it seem like I'm looking for an answer
To a question I can't ask
I don't know which way the feather falls
Nightingale, sing us a song
Of a love that once belonged
Nightingale, tell me your tale
Was your journey far too long?
All the voices that are spinnin' around me
Trying to tell me what to say
Can I fly right behind you
And you can take me away
All the voices that are spinnin' around me
Trying to tell me what to say
Can I fly right behind you
And you can take me away, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
You can take me away
In Norah Jones's song Nightingale, the lyrics speak directly to the bird itself as if it were a person who has gone through similar struggles in life. The nightingale is asked to sing a song about a love that once belonged, which suggests heartbreak and longing for lost love. The singer then asks if the nightingale's journey was far too long, perhaps alluding to the potential vulnerabilities that come with a long journey, similar to the wear and tear that many people experience in life.
The chorus repeats twice during the song, emphasizing the desire to hear the nightingale's tale and song. Jones then asks the nightingale for guidance, wanting direction in answering a question she cannot ask. She is torn between left and right and struggling to decide which path to take, much like the nightingale might face as it takes a journey through life. The mention of feather falling and bringing it left or right conveys the sense of indecision and the need for guidance.
Overall, the song is a contemplative piece that explores themes of heartbreak, loss, and the importance of taking guidance, finding one's own path, and moving forward. The metaphorical exploration of the nightingale's journey serves as a reflection of our own human experiences.

Oh beautiful bird, let us hear a melody
Of a love that once belonged
The story of a past love, now gone
Nightingale, tell me your tale
Bell-like bird, reveal your own story
Was your journey far too long?
Did you suffer on your expedition?
Does it seem like I'm looking for an answer
Am I trying to find a solution?
To a question I can't ask
To a question that is beyond me
I don't know which way the feather falls
The feather delicate drift I can't foretell
Or if I should blow it to the left
If it leans left, should I direct it there?
All the voices that are spinnin' around me
Many sounds confound me
Trying to tell me what to say
They dictate what I should or shouldn't say
Can I fly right behind you
May I accompany you through the skies?
And you can take me away
You could bring me to a peaceful place
Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah
La La La La La
You can take me away
Please take me away

on The Nearness of You
The Nearness Of You - Camille Thurman -Lyrics
Its not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
When you're in my arms
And I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams do come true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness of you
Saxophone Musical Interlude
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness, the nearness of you
