When an old friend I just happened to see
I introduced her to my loved one
And while they were dancin'
My friend stole my sweetheart from me
I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz
And I knew just how much I had lost
The night they were playing
The beautiful Tennessee Waltz
I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz
And I knew just how much I had lost
I have lost my little darlin'
The night they were playing
The beautiful beautiful Tennessee Waltz
The Tennessee Waltz
The lyrics of Norah Jones and Joel Harrison's "Tennessee Waltz" tell the story of a heartbroken narrator who takes his loved one to dance the Tennessee Waltz. While they were dancing, the singer's old friend appeared, and he introduced his friend to his sweetheart. However, as they danced, the friend stole the singer's sweetheart away. The singer watched in despair, realizing that he had lost his loved one.
The song is a classic example of a country waltz, featuring calming melodies and easy-to-follow rhythms. The choice of the Tennessee Waltz as a backdrop to this story also adds to the poignancy of the song. The lyrics themselves have a sense of melancholy, with the singer accepting the inevitability of his loss while still being heartbroken by it.
Overall, the song presents a timeless narrative of heartbreak and loss that many listeners can identify with. It's an evocative and powerful tribute to the power of country music to connect with deep emotions.
