That's What I Said
Norah Jones Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That's what I said, that's what I said
You missed the loophole in my head
That's what I said, that's what I said
That's what I said, that's what I said
If a nice girl sings about heart attacks
Will people listen or turn their backs?
Do people just want to move their feet?
Puffy clouds or puffy eyes
Don't know which will make me wise
Ridiculously analyzed
Damn, they move slow, that's no surprise
That's what I said, that's what I said
That's what I said, that's what I said
Now everyday, you pack a bow
Think about the words you know
Drag good people into holes
Your expertise runs very low
Critically, you ridicule
One who'd kick your ass in pool
But technically, you're just a tool
You point out things like your own school
That's what I said, that's what I said
Here we go, here we go, here we go right now
Have a daisy, have a rose
You dignifiedly pick your nose
Then wipe it on the girls whose pose
You'd like to hose and expose
Long and lazy, tough and lean
They call you out as the king of mean
You bite the hand of the too serene
I'll bet the king of mean's no sex machine
Typically, you're topical
You like the dance of push and pull
You think that everyone's a fool
But you're bananas and a bully
That's what I said, that's what I said
That's what I said, that's what I said
That's what I said, that's what I said
That's what I said, that's what I said
If you don't care 'bout what I said
You don't care 'bout what's in my head
You think I might as well be dead
Then how'd we end up back in bed?
The lyrics of Norah Jones's song That's What I Said are open to interpretation, but it seems to be a commentary on the difficulties of communication, the challenges of relationships, and the pitfalls of judgment. The repeated line "That's what I said" can be seen as a defiant declaration of the singer's intention to speak their mind, even if they are misquoted or misunderstood. The reference to a "loophole in my head" might suggest that the singer's thoughts are complex or difficult to convey, and that their words might be misinterpreted or misheard.
The second verse introduces the idea of "sugar-coating," suggesting that people might prefer to hear comforting falsehoods rather than difficult truths. The reference to heart attacks might suggest that some topics are too difficult or taboo to discuss openly. The lines "Do people just want to move their feet?" might be interpreted as a critique of shallow, escapist entertainment.
The third verse seems to focus on a specific person who is critical and judgmental, but also insecure and hypocritical. The singer seems to be taking a stand against this person, challenging their expertise and pointing out their flaws. The chorus repeats the defiant statement "That's what I said" as a reminder that the singer will not be silenced or intimidated. The final lines suggest that despite the difficulties between the two people, they are still physically attracted to each other.

on The Nearness of You
The Nearness Of You - Camille Thurman -Lyrics
Its not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
When you're in my arms
And I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams do come true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness of you
Saxophone Musical Interlude
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness, the nearness of you
