Turn Me On

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Like a light bulb in a dark room
I'm just sittin' here waiting for you
To come on home and turn me on
Like the desert waiting for the rain
Like a school kid waiting for the spring
I'm just sittin' here waiting for you
My poor heart, it's been so dark
Since you've been gone
After all, you're the one who turns me off
But you're the only one who can turn me back on
My hi-fi is waiting for a new tune
My glass is waiting for some fresh ice cubes
I'm just sittin' here waiting for you
To come on home and turn me on, turn me on
The lyrics to Norah Jones's song "Turn Me On" speak of waiting for someone to come home and rekindle the flame of a love that has grown cold. The metaphor used here is that of a flower waiting to bloom, symbolizing the potential for growth and renewal, but also implying a need for nurturing and care. Similarly, the analogy of a light bulb in a dark room represents the longing for someone to bring light to a situation that has become dull and lifeless.
Further, the lyrics liken the wait to that of a desert waiting for rain, stressing the importance and necessity of the loved one's return. The reference to a school kid waiting for spring signifies hope and anticipation, indicating that the waiting is not in vain. The lyrics evoke a sense of vulnerability and emotional dependence, emphasizing the importance of the lover's presence in the singer's life.
The chorus speaks to the power dynamic in the relationship. The singer's heart has been dark since the lover's absence, and they admit that the lover is the one who turns them off, but also the only one who can turn them back on. The lyrics convey a sense of vulnerability and emotional dependency on the loved one. Although the tone is longing and emotive, the lyrics are also playful, with references to a hi-fi waiting for a new tune and a drink waiting for fresh ice cubes, evoking an air of anticipation and excitement for the lover's return.

on The Nearness of You
The Nearness Of You - Camille Thurman -Lyrics
Its not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
When you're in my arms
And I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams do come true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness of you
Saxophone Musical Interlude
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness, the nearness of you
