Uh Oh
Norah Jones Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Will you step out of the way? Don't go
What would happen if I look out the window?
Is life slipping in and out of place? Uh oh
Please just tell me what to say, uh oh
Do you still think I'm okay? (Oh no)
What's the point of only looking for problems
When solving them sends me into space? (Uh oh, uh oh)
(Uh oh, uh oh)
Oh no
(Uh oh, uh oh)
Oh no, oh no
(Uh oh, uh oh)
Oh no, oh no
(Uh oh, uh oh)
Oh no, oh no
Uh oh, uh oh
Uh oh, uh oh
Uh oh, uh oh
Uh oh
If I breathe I will misplace my fear
I won't walk away in anger dear
Or in time I will forget
And I stumble toward you with hands around your neck
You hear, you hear
I look out the window and life
It has shifted out of place
Oh dear, oh dear
I'll just look out the window
My life's slipping in and out of place
Oh no, oh no
Oh no, oh no
Oh no, oh no
Oh no, oh no (uh oh, uh oh)
Oh no, oh no
Oh no, oh no (uh oh, uh oh)
Oh no, oh no
Oh no, oh no (uh oh, oh)
Oh no, oh no
Oh no, oh no (uh oh, oh)
Oh no, oh no
Oh no, oh no
(Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh)
(Uh oh, uh oh)
(Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh)
(Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh)
(Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh)
(Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh)
(Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh)
(Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh)
In "Uh Oh," Norah Jones explores the complexities of communication and the fear of confrontation in a relationship. The lyrics depict a sense of uncertainty and anxiety about expressing oneself directly to the other person. The repetition of "uh oh" throughout the song signifies a hesitation or apprehension before speaking up.
The first stanza reflects the internal conflict within the singer. They ponder what would happen if they were to confront the other person by saying something directly to their face or looking out the window, possibly metaphorical for seeing the truth. It seems that the singer is worried that their life is slipping out of place, and they seek reassurance from the other person but are afraid of their judgment.
The second stanza delves deeper into the singer's struggle. They contemplate the consequences of expressing their fears and emotions. Breathing represents a metaphorical release, but they fear it would lead to misplacing their fear and potentially walking away in anger. The image of stumbling toward the other person with hands around their neck suggests regret and desperation.
Overall, "Uh Oh" captures the internal battle of vulnerability and the fear of rejection. The repeated "uh oh" serves as a reminder of the hesitation that comes with confronting difficult emotions, and the uncertainty that accompanies expressing oneself openly.

on The Nearness of You
The Nearness Of You - Camille Thurman -Lyrics
Its not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
Its just the nearness of you
When you're in my arms
And I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams do come true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness of you
Saxophone Musical Interlude
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me
The right to hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness, the nearness of you
