Wait
Norah Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Drivin' at night, you feel as if you're blind
The sun is gone and it's stuck in your mind
You look to the morning with expectation
Anticipation

When you feel the dark coming and you know that it's here
You feel your spirit sing, you know there's nothing to fear
I'm here by your side, I've got to no where to go
So take your time, drive slow, listen to the radio
Talk if you want, if don't just change the station
I got patience

I tell myself wait
Wait till the sun goes down
Wait and you'll come around
And you'll smile for everyone
I'll make you a place
A place where the shadows fall
Can be anyone or no one at all
Just tell me what you want

I know, sometimes you feel the need to beware
I know that you scared that I care
But I wonder who you're with when you turn out the lights
Who do you think of at night

When you feel the dark coming and you know that it's here
I've been there before and you've got nothing to fear
I'll make you a place where the shadows fall
And you can be anyone or no one at all
We'll take solace from the burning sun
Let me be there for you just this once

I tell myself wait
Wait till the sun goes down
Wait and you'll come around
And you'll smile for everyone
I'll make you a place
A place where the shadows fall

Can be anyone or no one at all
Just tell me what you want

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Norah Jones's song "Wait" present a sense of longing and confusion. The opening lines describe a gloomy day with an atmosphere of sadness and despair, marked by a flag flying half-mast and a cloudy sky. The lyrics then shift to a poetic reflection on time, with the observation that despite it being spring, there is somehow no feeling of renewal or possibility. This is followed by a metaphor about chewing all the fun from one's gum, which could represent the feeling of being dissatisfied with life and searching for something more.

The theme of uncertainty and confusion continues with the lines "I'm on the edge/I'm in the yellow paint." This could refer to teetering on the brink of a decision, unsure of which direction to go in. The tone is then lightened slightly by the romantic imagery of a lunar eclipse and the touch of someone's lips. However, this is immediately subverted by the image of a river of doubt that cannot be turned off, showing that even in moments of happiness, there can still be an undercurrent of fear and anxiety.

The final verse returns to a more melancholic mood, with the singer staring out at a church and thinking about what might have been. The request for a double drink at the end of the verse suggests a desire to forget or numb these painful thoughts. Overall, the lyrics of "Wait" are evocative and emotive, capturing the complexity of human emotions and the difficulties of navigating life's challenges.

Wah. OK that was completely out of the blue. I am thinking this is one of the songs she would do in that crazy band she is secretly in, the one where she dresses up and wears a wig or summit and they play strange funky music, which is completely different to a lot of what she has done professionally. Like the butterflies song i am not sure about this, but it is sure nice to see the weirder side of Mrs Jones, and i do actually like this song...i think.
