SUNRISE
Norah Jones (Shankar) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sunrise, sunrise
Looks like mornin' in your eyes
But the clock's held 9:15 for hours
Sunrise, sunrise
Couldn't tempt us if it tried
'Cause the afternoon's already come and gone

And I said
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
To you

Surprise, surprise
Couldn't find it in your eyes
But I'm sure it's written all over my face
Surprise, surprise
Never something I could hide
When I see we made it through another day

And I said
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
To you

Now the night
Will throw its cover down
On me again
Ooh, and if I'm right
It's the only way
To bring me back

Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
To you
Hoo, ooh, yeah
Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh

Hoo, ooh, ooh, ooh
To you

Overall Meaning

The song "Sunrise" by Norah Jones begins with the singer observing the sunrise and the morning light in someone else's eyes, but the clock has remained unmoved since 9:15 am. She seems to admire the natural beauty, yet she acknowledges that time is stagnant. She then sings that the actual rise of the sun doesn't interest them, as the afternoon has already come and gone.

In the second verse, Jones sings that she can't find any signs of surprise in the other person's eyes, but she knows she wears that expression on her face. She never conceals the fact that she's happy and surprised they've managed to get through another day together. The third and final verse is a bit more abstract than the first two, but seems to recount an experience in which the night has covered her once again. She sings that this is "the only way" to bring her back, although it is unclear where she has disappeared to. The song concludes with the same refrain as earlier.
