Here I Am
Norman Saleet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here I am, playing with those mem'ries again,
And just when I thought time had set me free,
Those thoughts of you keep taunting me.
Holding you, a feeling I never outgrew,
Though each and ev'ry part of me has tried,
Only you can fill that space inside,
So there's no sense pretending, my heart is not mending,
Just when I thought I was over you,
And just when I thought I could stand on my own,
Oh, baby those mem'ries come crashing through,
And I just can't go on without you.

On my own, I've tried to make the best of it alone.
I've done ev'rything I can to ease the pain.
But only you can stop the rain.
I just can't live without you, I miss ev'rything about you.

Just when I thought I was over you,
And just when I thought I could stand on my own,
Oh, baby those mem'ries come crashing through,
And I just can't go on without, go on without,
It's just no good without you.
Without you.
Without you.

Without you.
Without you.

Overall Meaning

The song "Here I Am" by Norman Saleet is a heart-wrenching ballad about a person who is unable to let go of their ex despite their best efforts. The lyrics reveal the singer's struggle with the memories of their former partner and the realization that they cannot possibly move on without them. The opening verse, "Here I am, playing with those mem'ries again, And just when I thought time had set me free," sets the tone for the entire song.

The lyrics convey a sense of desperation and longing as the singer remembers the past relationship and how it made them feel. The phrase, "Holding you, a feeling I never outgrew, Though each and ev'ry part of me has tried," shows how despite trying to move on and forget, the feelings for their ex only grew stronger. The chorus, "Just when I thought I was over you, And just when I thought I could stand on my own, Oh, baby those mem'ries come crashing through, And I just can't go on without you," emphasizes the fact that no matter how hard they try, the memories and the feelings associated with them just won't go away.

The lyrics also depict the helplessness of the singer in their attempt to move on. The line, "On my own, I've tried to make the best of it alone. I've done ev'rything I can to ease the pain. But only you can stop the rain," emphasizes the fact that no matter what the singer does, they cannot replace the love they once had. The final lines, "Without you, Without you, Without you," are sung repeatedly, emphasizing the depth of the singer's feelings.
