The subtle actions that Jon Bernthal does is so underrated. The fact he scratches his head with a utensil like a stick goes to show how disassociated and disconnected his character is in comparison to a Logan's innocently pure character who's never seen the horrors of the battlefield. I think a lot of people are really missing the mark on Jon's character. We're not supposed to hate him. His character wasn't a despicable person. He was someone trying to process and adjust to war. This scene nails it for the entire tank. They're all just trying to process and they feel betrayed that Don took out the new guy to have a pleasant meal while the rest of his family, the ones that have been there through it all, weren't. Not just that, but it was with "the enemy." It was a moment of tension that was settled. Every character reacts to their insecurities. Imagine watching your friends die, killing animals for three days, trying to hold onto your humanity and then seeing your commander sitting in a house with the new guy eating eggs with the people you're fighting. And in the end, while Don was trying to find a bit of peace for a second, he answers the challenge. He slams his fist down (literally) and answers the challenge by spitting at them. As soon as he shows the war is still real the group backs down. Just wanting to know that he still felt what they did. It's a hell of a scene for a reason, and calling Bernthal's character a bully or reflecting the group in a negative light is really selling the whole thing short for what it was.

I deal with PTSD and I can remember when I use to drink saying "I'm just drunk I'm sorry" exactly how he did in that regretful tone. To me, this scene really encapsulated PTSD quite well. The tension, the forgetting to breathe for what feels like minutes, remembering details that you never thought you'd remember, especially smells. For me the smells always stood out most.

This scene is incredible and so well acted by everyone in it. They come barging in all loud and obnoxious, and you want to hate them for it, but as the scene goes on, you start to realize that they aren't being spiteful or immature, they feel betrayed. They're upset, because they've spent years going through hell with each other and dodging death at every turn, just to be left outside in the rain while Boss Man and the New Guy go inside and have a nice meal with some nice clean ladies. Jon's frustration, Shia's sadness, and Michael choking back tears while telling the story about the horses, incredible scene in an incredible film.

The monsters Brad Pitt had to create in order for them to survive are seeing in the new guy what they used to be and they hate being reminded of what they have lost…but at the exact same time, they know they would all be dead if Brad Pitts character hadn’t transformed them into the savages they are. Brad pitts character despises having to ruin these men, but he knows it’s the ultimate lesser of two evils…so he wants the young kid to experience innocence for possibly the last time before he is made into a monster.

Yes he’s very unlikeable here but in the scope of everything that’s said here by Peña, being mean to a couple girls is a very very mild outcome considering Peña’s story. Dudes are on the edge of breaking. Which is why Pitt needs this dinner to replicate some sort of normality.

Michael Peña is really good. I heard it was an improvisation on his part and I would not even know if I haven't seen the article about it so convincing it was. It's so good and so bad at the same time. The historical accuracy and the realism regarding fighting etc. is super underwhelming, but the characters are so damn well written and the acting is so insanely good. When it would have a similar realism like "All Quiet on the Western Front" or movies like that, it would have been a 10/10.

As a marine I did a lot of pondering into this scene. My interpretation is that when given a chance to escape the war, some troops still imagined life as it was. In moments of reprieve they would recreate home. But other troops were unable to escape and return to civilization. They brought the battlefield back home. I thank God that He helped me process those things I experienced. I feel 100% healed and whole. I pray for those who did not heal.

Never served and don't pretend to be able to imagine. I've read a lot, because I figure it's important. What they're talking about here, the Falaise Gap, really stuck with me. You got a real sense of how the carnage was on such a hellish scale that witnesses simply couldn't convey it in any meaningful way. You can read the statistics, some of the descriptions, but it's almost like they don't make sense. There were horrific battles on the Eastern front and in the Pacific, but almost nothing that matched the slaughter of Falaise in such a concentrated area.

Damn this scene was so good. Don "trying" to escape the war to have a moment of normalcy. Norman is the best reflection of normalcy, so being with him makes sense. The reflection of war with his squad, family he's been through so much with, he had to escape for a moment. And they felt betrayed. Minds captured in war and you could feel it in this scene.

This is my favorite scene of the movie!! It's so heart wrenching!
"You like horses, Norman?". As soon as he asked that seemingly innocent question, the entire crew knew what he was talking about. The pain in every one of their faces in this scene stabbed my heart. It was subtle, but deep. And to end with "I'm just drunk, I'm sorry." hit me hard.
Fuckin PTSD, man.
Side note - I named my black cat Norman because of this scene.

I just hate how Brad Pitt translates the sign wrong when asked what they mean. The sign he translated doesn't show up until they get into the town and see the kid hanging from the building. And it wasn't the one he was reading before.

I remember this happening to me but in a civilian version, a bunch of my friends from my old neighborhood showed up to a table I was in with people from work. They didn’t have good etiquette and just brought it on to themselves to sit and talk about the old times and crazy sh!t we went through. I feel what Brad felt in this scene because at the same time he wanted to destroy Jon, if it wasn’t for his crazy ass, you wouldn’t have survived the past and when sh!t went down, you need people like him around. Brads character wanted a glimpse of normalcy for at least for a moment but that was neither the time or place unfortunately because that plants a seed in your men’s minds, will he betray them for any new thing that comes along when we are supposed to be brothers. The scene is genius because Brad has no way out and just has to sit and take it, sucks but a great scene

My Dad was an infantryman in Europe in WW2. He said you could smell rotting bodies all the way from Normandy to the front line. He said you just got used to it, that and rotting corpses everywhere. That's why they weren't overwhelmed by the smell when the liberated different German concentration and slave labor camps in Germany. It was the human skeletons that shocked them and the neatly stacked dead bodies.

@nick I don't like how the wej portrays the soldiers of old here. Trying to make it seem like people and everything in the past was rough and bad, while all their planned destructive liberalism that's mostly came since ww2 to today, is good and progressive.
We need to start organising and connecting worldwide, but it is a good sign seeing the uptake in lots more people noticing

PTSD has to be one of the scariest things anyone can deal with this scene shows it isn't just screaming and going crazy it's remembering the pain and persuading yourself not to go crazy.

I think the moment before the climax where John Bernthal's character just simply tells the young guy "I think I'm not a good man. But I think maybe, you are, so..." as essentially their final interaction was such a great and memorable piece of development for a "bully"-like character. Truly showing that horribly flawed or cruel people are at their core, probably aware of how they come across to others, and are at some degree ashamed of how they see themselves, further feeding the cycle of their cruelty. Haven't seen it put in such a concise, subtle moment outside of this movie.

that was a great movie. just fantastic acting from Brad pitt, michel pena, jon bernthal and shea lebouf. all the rest of actors though made it all totally believeable. The last battle scene loosely based on audie murphy's MOH action in ww2. oh yeah, 10 out of 10 !! thanks for mentioning Canada. we had juno effing beach on d-day, we took caen and helped the yanks and brits seal the falsise pocket.

Amazing scene, i watched this movie again the other night as my grandad was in the royal tank regiment. Brad Pitt is the best actor in my opinion... but there all brilliant and make this scene one of a kind. The brutal reality of war has defined these men and shaped them into what you see here. Betrayed by there commander makes them feel unappreciated and gives them a feeling of not being good enough... they hate it, expecially when the new guy is with him... the one who who hasnt been through it with them. Brad pitts character just wanted to feel normal again but couldnt do that with these guys around as it clearly shows when they eneter the room. Brillaint

You've got to watch the whole movie for the context of the scene. This is a story about a band of brothers. It's a diff/scaled down version of Saving Private Ryan, but really it's about the relationship between a family of 'brothers' who live and fight in a tank.

Wish I could shake his hand and share my gratitude. I love to visit old battlefields and memorials/monuments. I honored the fallen at Normandy when I went to the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA in the summer of 2021. Their sacrifices will not be forgotten, at least by me, and I plan to continue learning of their experiences and making sure in some way their efforts won't die out.
