Dream Awake
Northlane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pay close attention
Or else you'll miss what's happening
We worship the sun
Yet we burn it's rays
So we seek out the dark
So we seek out the shade
It's such a mix of emotions
We call it regret
Chaotic patterns unfold
It's such an elegant mess
So I'll embrace the pain
It's time to face all my fears
I've had enough of this game
Oh how it brings me to tears
And I can only be sure
One day I won't be alive
Stepping into the future
With the brightest of eyes
Let time stand still
For one second please just stop
Oh my
It's frightening
It's right in front of my eyes
Oh my
It's right there
It's right in front of my eyes
Wake up from the nightmare
And become the dream
That you've always been
That you've always seen
Wake up from the nightmare
Because you are the dream
I stand tall grounded here on this earth
I'm loooking up at the sky
With the stars in my eyes, I'm alive
I'm looking up at the sky
I see life was my dream all along
I'm looking up at the sky
My self
My world
My people

My home
My everything

Overall Meaning

The song "Dream Awake" by Northlane explores the concept of human emotions and the complexities of life. The lyrics suggest that people often miss out on the significant experiences in life if they don't pay close attention to what's happening around them. The opening lines urge people to be more attentive, as the world around them is constantly in motion. People may worship or desire the sun, but it's ultimately harmful to them, which is why they may seek out the dark or shade. The singer sees human emotions as a "mix" of experiences, and describes it as "regret," a testament to how painful emotions can be when they are unresolved.

As the song progresses, the singer continues to highlight the chaos that unfolds when one embraces their emotions. While the emotions might be messy, the singer describes them as an "elegant mess." They are willing to embrace the pain and face any fears that come up as they move forward. There is an acknowledgment in the lyrics that life is fleeting, and that one day, nobody will be alive. Despite this, the song embraces life and encourages listeners to become the dream they have always wanted.

The chorus "Wake up from the nightmare and become the dream, that you've always been" serves as a reminder that life is meant to be enjoyed, not endured. The bridge of the song "I stand tall, grounded here on this earth" affirms the singer's connection to the world around them. They use the imagery of looking up at the sky to suggest that they see the beauty of life all around them. The song concludes with a repetition of the line "my self, my world, my people, my home, my everything." This repetition serves as a reminder that everything one needs for happiness is already within them.

the lyrical genius and motivation in these guys words are inspiring and igniting.. this whole album is amazing in a lot of ways. Lyrically I see it as phenomenal.. These are a small example of the powerfully uplifting lyrics this band's moral character represents. Amazing, especially when you read along with the words being brutally screamed/honest at you.

Whosoever wrote the lyrics for this album, presumably Adrian, was clearly a student of esoteric philosophy. That’s why the message conveyed is so powerful. This version of Northlane can’t be beaten ever, good times.

@mannysykes

Can’t ever be beat, at a time of such transcendence they dropped this whole album.

Along with the golden era, if only music nowadays were trying decipher the secrets of reality. Not spread its chaos.

You commenting , brought me back.

The lyrical symmetry between this and quantum flux are disgusting. Those 2 songs by them when this was their line up just brought power. Wake up from the nightmare and become the dream. It is too real to admit.
