RISE
Nosferatu Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know the Devil's lady
She don't look too good in white
Keeps her dragons on the naked backs of all she might
I know the Devil's coming
Gonna help her with her detailed pattern changes every evening
For a chance to spread the light

One more kiss and we say goodbye to angels in her eyes
One more look and we kiss hello to Heaven

Chance would be a fine thing
Keeps her where she's teetering
Knife-edge cold promotionals won't move her to a flight

One more kiss and we say goodbye to angels in her eyes
One more look and we kiss hello to Heaven
In between the sky and earth I'm waiting for a rise
In between this Hell on earth forever

Screaming while she takes the poison
Burns her throat and holds her arms
Something painful isn't always something that isn't nice

If your witness isn't subtle

Cast your witness still aside
If your need is buried deep, then bury me, come deep inside

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nosferatu's song "Rise" paint a vivid picture of a woman who is linked with the Devil, and who seems to be trapped between Heaven and Hell. The song is dark and brooding, with a sense of melancholy and despair that pervades the lyrics.

The opening verse describes the woman as the "Devil's lady", and suggests that she is not pure or innocent, as she "don't look too good in white". She is depicted as someone who is in control of powerful dragons, and who is always changing her patterns. This could suggest that she is unpredictable and dangerous, and perhaps even capable of causing harm to those around her.

The chorus shifts to a more emotional tone, as the singer reflects on the fleeting nature of beauty and the transience of life. He suggests that every kiss with the Devil's lady is a chance to say goodbye to angels in her eyes, while every look is a chance to say hello to Heaven. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the fleeting pleasures of life, and the idea that we must seize the moment before it passes us by.

The second verse draws attention to the woman's ambivalence towards life and death. She is described as "teetering" on the edge of something, but it is not clear whether this is a reference to suicide or simply a state of indecision. The lines "Knife-edge cold promotionals won't move her to a flight" suggest that she is resistant to change, and that she is not easily swayed by the enticements of the world.

The final verse returns to the sense of pain and suffering that runs through the song. The woman is depicted as screaming while she takes poison, suggesting that she is willingly inflicting harm on herself. The line "Something painful isn't always something that isn't nice" is cryptic, but it could suggest that the woman is taking pleasure from her own pain, or that she is pursuing a goal that is worth suffering for.

Overall, "Rise" is a complex and multi-layered song that explores themes of beauty, pain, and the nature of human desire. It is a haunting and atmospheric piece of music that leaves a lasting impression on the listener.

This takes me back... . I still listen to this regularly, having purchased it in the year of its release. Despite the stick that Nosferatu got at the time from some quarters, they were more original than many at the time. This, their debut album, has held up remarkably well. The chills of pleasure that I get from listening to it that are the same as then. They were great live, too. Now, if only Vlad would emerge from his other life and team up with Louis to make new music, linking onto both "Rise" and Louis' wonderful compostions from "Wonderland".... .
