Zero Day
Nothing Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything
Starts the same
Infinity
Oblivion

Light abandons me
Exhale sky
Swallow vanity
Hostage of
Unspeakable mistrust
Motionless
Migration of dust

Blood that binds
Oxygen and time
Beautiful
Rarest plague

Light abandons me
I guess
I wasn't meant to see
Hostage of
Unspeakable mistrust
Motionless
Emotionless
Empire of rust

Feverish children
In the Lion's Den
Gather them all

Empty sky of everlasting misfortune
The Harvest is dead

Overall Meaning

In the song "Zero Day" by Nothing, the lyrics suggest a sense of hopelessness and powerlessness in the face of life's inevitable end. The song starts by highlighting the cyclical nature of existence, that everything starts and ends the same way. The line "Infinity, Oblivion" suggests that life is infinite but ultimately leads to oblivion, or nothingness.

The second verse talks about the feeling of being abandoned by light, a metaphor for hope or positivity, and the act of exhaling the sky, indicating a sense of futility. The line "Swallow vanity" suggests that the singer is aware of their own illusions and self-delusions, and are trying to come to terms with them. The following line "Hostage of Unspeakable mistrust" paints a picture of being stuck in a state of paranoia, unable to trust others or even oneself. The phrase "Migration of dust" refers to the transitory nature of all things and the insignificance of human existence in the grand scheme of things.

The final verse uses the metaphor of "Blood that binds, Oxygen and time" to connect humans with the natural world and the forces that give us life. The line "beautiful, rarest plague" is a paradox, suggesting that life is both beautiful and dangerous, like a disease that we cannot resist. The chorus repeats the line "Hostage of Unspeakable mistrust" to show that the sense of paranoia and isolation is pervasive and inescapable. The final line "The Harvest is dead" is a bleak metaphor for the end of human existence, as all that was once fruitful and alive has withered away and died.

NOTHING’s third full-length recording, Dance On The Blacktop, is the next chapter in the band’s tumultuous story and like its predecessors, pulls from all corners of life with a focus on the bleak and despairing. Captured by renowned producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile) at Dreamland Studio in Woodstock, NY, Dance On The Blacktop is a stirring collection of songs accentuating the band’s love for all sounds 90s from both sides of the pond; from alternative rock and shoegaze to the realms of pop and post-punk. Across the course of 45 minutes, NOTHING weave together nine tales of heightened confusion, anxiety, paranoia, depression and chronic pain juxtaposed against angelic yet apocalyptic, reverberating walls of shimmering sound. Dance On The Black Top is a fervent, emotional tour-de-force, the sound of a band at the peak of their individuality.

@ssaviah

it's awesome

@dstutz

Why does this track sound so muffled? Sounds like a poor mastering job, or was it intentional?

@wadeofearth

That is such a wonderful description of this album and their music in general. It really makes you feel like you are not alone and like someone truly understands. I have followed them since "Downward Years To Come" and I can without a doubt say they are one of my favorite creations in this world.

Nothings song β€œDig” helped me get through 11 months of prison. I didn’t even know who wrote the song at the time but it was my anchor. I’d sing it in my head on the days I was feeling like I couldn’t pull through. I still do it now being free. It took me almost a month after getting out to find your band. I’m glad I did.
