The Burn
Nothing Ever Stays Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In the song "The Burn" by Nothing Ever Stays, the singer is expressing their understanding of someone else's emotions and actions. They claim to be able to read every move of this person, who seems to be afraid of letting go and whose actions are causing distress. Despite the person's claim that they are over the situation at hand, the singer implies that the person is showing signs of not being able to move on from it completely.
The chorus of the song advances this notion, as the singer sings "you can not feel the burn," suggesting that the person is unable to fully let go and move on from whatever is troubling them. The two parties seem to have had some sort of a falling out, and despite the singer's acknowledgement that the other person will be missed, there is a sense of finality to the situation. The ending lines of the song, "you said you're over this. I guess you knew you'd quit. You can not feel the burn," suggest that the other person has given up on trying to let go and move on, and has accepted that they cannot shake off the pain of the situation.
