Belle
Notre-Dame de Paris Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Bella
Ma sale su l'inferno a stringere me
O Fiordaliso, vedi, non c'e fede in me
C'e

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Belle from Notre-Dame de Paris describe the singer's infatuation with Esmeralda, a beautiful and seductive young woman. The lyrics are written in Italian, but the song originally comes from a French musical based on Victor Hugo's classic novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The song is sung from the perspective of the male protagonist, who is clearly enamored with Esmeralda but also somewhat conflicted about his feelings for her.

The lyrics use poetic and sensual language to describe Esmeralda. The singer calls her "bella," meaning beautiful in Italian, and suggests that her beauty is almost otherworldly. He expresses a desire to possess her and keep her close, but he also realizes that she is forbidden and dangerous. He sees her as an embodiment of sin and temptation, describing her as a demon who has incarnated in human form. However, he is unable to resist her allure and is consumed by his desire for her.

Despite the singer's infatuation, he is also aware of the social and religious constraints that prevent him from being with Esmeralda. He prays to Notre Dame, the famous cathedral in Paris, and asks for forgiveness for his sinful thoughts. He also acknowledges that society would condemn him for being with Esmeralda, and he imagines himself becoming a criminal if he were to act on his desires. The singer seems to be torn between his passion for Esmeralda and his fear of societal judgment and punishment.

Belle
A quoi me sert encore de prier Notre-Dame?
Quel
À quoi me sert encore de prier Notre-Dame
Quel

@sarcasticat_456

Maybe it's because of my terrible ears and headphones, but at the end, when they're singing together, I love how certain lines are emphasized by characters.

Like, they all sing:

What's the point in praying to Notre-Dame?

But it's Quasimodo's voice that's the loudest.

They all sing:

They're the ones that don't deserve to live on Earth.

The other two are louder on "deserve to live" whereas Quasimodo's loudest on "Live on Earth."

Again, probably reading too much into it, but I love how they can say the same words but have different meanings.

@@user-ue6uc2xp9l Not very good translation but it will give you a start:

How can I still get goosebumps every time the three of them join in the final verse. This is one of the most magnificent musical creations of all time.

@yessbbb

This is a satanic song. Asking lucifer to touch the hair of emeralda is not something God would have liked

@KameliaMaarefi
