Initially their sound was a fusion of psychedelic rock with traditional folk sounds, Brazilian as well as Latin, a style that is most evident in É Ferro na Boneca (1970). Their music began to gravitate more towards MPB, particularly due to João Gilberto's influence, who frequently visited the group. Their 1972 album Acabou Chorare contained the classic Preta Pretinha. The group had a strong hippie image and in same year, they moved to a community in Jacarepaguá. They left Som Livre and joined the Continental label in 1973. The band released records until their break-up in 1979.
The album "Acabou Chorare" was elected in 2007 as the best Brazilian music album of all time.

The lyrics of Novos Baianos's song "Eu De Adjetivos" convey a sense of movement and exploration. The repetition of the phrase "entre o passo e a consequência" (between the step and the consequence) suggests navigating through life, making choices and facing the outcomes that follow. The repetition of "eu de a, de a, djetivos" emphasizes the personal involvement and agency in this process.
The lyrics also touch upon a sense of history and heritage. The reference to "todos os ladrilhos pisados, passados" (all the tiles stepped on, passed) alludes to a journey through time and experience, acknowledging the footsteps that have been taken before. The line "passando de risco a traço, pra ser caminho" (going from risk to stroke, to be a path) suggests that taking risks and leaving a mark on the world is necessary to forge a unique path.
The mention of "minas do Rei Salomão" (mines of King Solomon) adds a mythical and ancient element to the lyrics. It symbolizes the pursuit of wisdom and abundance. Additionally, the imagery of "circuitos das luzes" (circuits of lights) reflects the vibrant and diverse nature of the homeland, with its fiery, aromatic, and torch-like lights.
