Initially their sound was a fusion of psychedelic rock with traditional folk sounds, Brazilian as well as Latin, a style that is most evident in É Ferro na Boneca (1970). Their music began to gravitate more towards MPB, particularly due to João Gilberto's influence, who frequently visited the group. Their 1972 album Acabou Chorare contained the classic Preta Pretinha. The group had a strong hippie image and in same year, they moved to a community in Jacarepaguá. They left Som Livre and joined the Continental label in 1973. The band released records until their break-up in 1979.
The album "Acabou Chorare" was elected in 2007 as the best Brazilian music album of all time.

O samba da minha terra
Deixa a gente mole
Quando se canta, todo mundo bole
Quando se canta, todo mundo bole
Quando se canta, tudo mundo bole...
Quem não gosta de samba
É ruim da cabeça
Ou é doente do pé
Eu nasci com o samba
No samba me criei
E do danado do samba
Eu nunca me separei...
Samba lá da Bahia
Deixa a gente mole
Quando se canta, todo mundo bole
Quando se canta, todo mundo bole
Quando se canta, todo mundo bole...(2x)
Quem não gosta de samba
Bom sujeito não é
É ruim da cabeça
Ou doente do pé
Eu nasci com o samba
No samba me criei
E do danado do samba
Eu nunca me separei...
É que samba lá da Bahia
Deixa a gente mole
Quando se canta, todo mundo bole
Quando se canta, todo mundo bole
Quando se canta, todo mundo bole...(2x)
Quem não gosta de samba
Bom sujeito não é
É ruim da cabeça
Ou é doente do pé
Eu nasci com o samba
No samba me criei
E do danado do samba
Eu nunca me separei...

Novos Baianos's song O Samba da minha terra is a tribute to samba, a genre of music and dance that originated in Brazil in the early 20th century. The song's lyrics describe the joyful and infectious nature of samba, which makes everyone feel "mole" or loose and carefree. The refrain repeats this sentiment, saying that "when we sing, everyone shakes" or "bole", emphasizing the physicality of samba as a dance that makes one's body move and sway.
The lyrics also comment on the cultural significance of samba in Brazil, suggesting that it is a defining element of Brazilian identity. The verses state that "if you don't like samba, you're not a good person" and that those who dislike it must either be crazy or have something wrong with their feet. The repetition of the phrase "I was born with samba, I grew up with samba, and I never separated myself from the damn samba" further emphasizes the idea that samba is an integral part of the Brazilian experience.
Overall, the song O Samba da minha terra celebrates the joyful and inclusive nature of samba, while also acknowledging its cultural significance and the important role it plays in Brazilian society.
